I was surprised by its low rating and, despite seeing divided opinions elsewhere, I decided to buy it blind. The truth is, I like it, but even though the bottle is stylish and it’s marketed for women, it smells too masculine. It starts with a gorgeous sorbet lemon note, but it’s a shame the fragrance is so fleeting, lasting barely three hours. Having only lavender and geranium in the heart doesn’t seem ideal for a woman; they create a sour, sharp fougère effect that clashes heavily with the cedar until the noticeable musk finally softens it, by which time the lemon has turned woody and slightly rummy. The only trick I’ve found is layering it with Álvarez Gómez, but the effect doesn’t last more than 15 minutes. The good news is its sillage is moderate to soft. Setting aside its lack of power and longevity, its resemblance to Sauvage is striking. It also reminds me of a fresher, more citrusy version of the Stradivarius room spray, so it might be overwhelming for delicate noses. As I said, I like it, but Solace has that androgynous quality that ultimately leans masculine, so if I recommend it, it’s for men or women who enjoy wearing men’s fragumes. As they say, there’s no shame in it.
