Stephen Nilsen
Stephen Nilsen, a well-known perfumer, was born and raised in the United States. He developed a strong foundation in chemical engineering, earning a Bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1990. During his time at Georgia Tech, Nilsen took part in the study and work program (Co-Op) and obtained a Certificate in French Language. He continued his education at Stanford University, earning a Doctorate (PhD) in Chemical Engineering from 1990 to 1995. His doctoral thesis focused on the structure and dynamics of ordered and disordered colloidal suspensions.
Nilsen’s journey into the world of perfumery began at Procter & Gamble, where he trained as a flavorist from April 1996 to January 2001. After completing his training, Nilsen joined Quest International, later acquired by Givaudan, as a perfumer. Throughout his distinguished career, he has created fragrances for several high-profile brands, including Anthropologie, Avon, Bond No. 9, Commodity, Donna Karan, Flower Drew Barrymore, Graff, Hilary Duff, Katy Perry, Kenneth Cole, Leslie Blodgett, Madonna, Max Azria, Natura, Sarah Jessica Parker, Six Scents, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang, and Victoria's Secret.
Some of the most popular fragrances Nilsen has created include Madonna Truth or Dare, Madonna Truth or Dare by Madonna Naked, Hilary Duff With Love, Vera Wang Lovestruck, and Donna Karan DKNY Stories. One of his most notable creations is the Drew Barrymore fragrance, Cherished, which has been described as a scent that “feels like a big olfactory hug.”
