Tete-a-Tete: A Woody Oriental Time Capsule From the '80s

Tete-a-Tete Eau de Cologne from Новая Заря (The New Dawn) is a men's woody oriental that launched back in the 1980s.

Rated 3.87 out of 5 from 179 votes, it keeps a straightforward retro profile that still draws curiosity from fans of classic scents.

The opening brings together black currant, anise, mandarin, green notes and celery. It feels green and fruity with an herbal-anise twist that stands out right away.

At the center, ylang-ylang, jasmine and rose add a creamy, lightly soapy floral layer while keeping the overall tone firmly masculine.

The drydown rests on oakmoss, amber, musk, patchouli, vetiver and vanilla. That base turns warm, earthy and woody with just a touch of sweetness.

Overall the lead accords are woody, earthy and musky, backed by green, softly spiced, fruity, mossy, amber, anise and sweet facets. As an eau de cologne, it wears direct and unfussy, very much in tune with its decade.

It will suit men who like classic green-mossy scents with soft spice, and collectors looking to explore the house's woody oriental style through an '80s example.

Bottom line: a face-to-face with another era — green up top, warm at the base — best picked for vintage character rather than modern polish.

  1. It’s a dupe (90% similar) of Magie Noire by Lancome, scent-wise it’s a 10/10, its only flaw is its poor longevity (it projects for about 30 min and stays close to the skin for about 3 hours), but given its low price you can apply it freely. The masculine version comes in a splash and is about 20 USD for 100ml
