New York Intense by Nicolai Parfumeur Createur is an aromatic woody fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2014, this composition features the olfactory signature of Patricia de Nicolai. The top notes unfold with bergamot, lemon, hyssop, and thyme; the heart reveals lavender, clove, chamomile, and cinnamon; while the base settles on incense, resins, styrax, musk, and tonka bean.

I really like it. It starts with lemon, then dives into a spicy phase with lots of black pepper, clove, and a touch of lavender. The base is oakmoss with vanilla hints and dirty nuances. It’s a citrus fragrance at the start, with a very spicy, classic, and masculine heart. It’s versatile, the performance is good, and the longevity lasts a long time. The truth is, it has way too much black pepper for my taste. Ideal for spring, autumn, and winter, both day and night.
Here we go! Bitter orange, butter cookie, full-on oakmoss, dreamy lavender, earthy patchouli, and a touch of animal funk. This fragrance is a high-contrast, dirty-fresh masculine, super saturated, with distinctive materials and top-tier quality. It’s so complex it took me months to unravel it. Is it a fougère? Yes. Is it chypre? Also yes. Very much in the Guerlain line, it has facets of Mitsouko, Habit Rouge, and Derby. (Yesterday I wore my Dior Jules, and it also has echoes of those green, wet, herbal notes with a bitter touch). It’s a maximalist composition with multiple layers. The warm spices, especially clove and cinnamon, mix with a dry vanilla and an ambered facet of labdanum, while the acidity of the cider and the freshness of the green notes stay present throughout the evolution. (Side note: I read somewhere that this fragrance is a tribute by Patricia de Nicolaï to Alpona by Caron (1939), the last perfume composed by Ernest Daltroff before his exile from France due to the Nazi occupation. Apparently, New York Intense emulates the style and composition of that classic.) The overall effect is luxurious, slightly aristocratic, and somewhat formal. For me, it’s too heavy in extreme heat; better to reserve it for cool or temperate climates. I plan to wear it at my next formal evening event… in that context, it will be a huge success. A magnificent composition.
NY Intense smells like a refreshed classic, full of character and more than enough quality. It opens with citrus where the cider takes the lead, then moves into a potent vintage heart featuring lavender, moss, and clove, settling on a musky, dirty base with spices (according to pedjalazaro, it might have a bit too much pepper), yet it’s not even a little bit ugly; it can evoke the vibe of Azzaro Pour Homme or Kouros. Over time, the citrus charge fades, becoming more earthy and dense, until it lands on a classic, herbal, and clean vibe. I love the opening and the dry-down the most; it’s wearable, though sometimes it treads ground that some might find too harsh. Fans of 80s perfumes will fall in love with it because it elevates the quality and power of what today’s reformulations have ruined, adding its own pinch of originality. I see it as super masculine, versatile, with beast-mode performance suitable for everything from semi-formal to formal. I like it, recommend trying it, though I think I’m a few years away from wearing it. Rating: 7.5/10. Thanks, Tony.
I really like this brand; classic scents modernized for our times. This is my fourth fragrance, and I can say with some knowledge that they all follow the same woody, citrusy, and spicy base. This scent starts very similarly to what I know: citrus, woody, and slightly spicy. After ten minutes, it starts taking its own direction, revealing a very subtle oakmoss, a hint of musk, and cinnamon. In my personal opinion, I smell hay, the same scent as the Pravia hay line. I love it; it reminds me of my adolescence, as my mom used to use this brand’s soap, shampoo, and balm a lot. A classic fragrance, not groundbreaking but very tasty for those who like vintage perfumes, especially from the 70s and 80s. Suitable for formal or semi-formal wear, for all seasons except winter or very cold climates. Recommended for mature men, over 30 years old. Scent: 8/10 Sillage: 8/10 Projection: 8.5/10 Longevity: 4/10
This smells like the 70s/80s, with lots of moss and a slight modern touch. Redundant if you already have many vintage perfumes, but it can be a good option if you want to add a retro scent that feels high-quality to your collection. Of course, don’t buy blindly.
Damn! Bitter orange, buttery cookie, plenty of oakmoss, dreamy lavender, earthy patchouli, and a touch of animal funk. For me, it’s too heavy in extreme heat; better to save it for cool or moderate climates. I plan to wear it at my next formal evening event… in that context, it will be a total success. A magnificent composition.
Great value, smells vintage and super masculine. It brings a fresh air to the classic Puig Agua Brava, but with higher-quality ingredients, better longevity, and great versatility.
