I found this by chance at the store where I normally buy Argentine Yves d’Orgeval replicas—they’re decent and affordable—but this is the authentic French version. As soon as I sniffed it, I found it exquisite and it brought back olfactory memories of some other scent I can’t quite place. Here’s the description from the brand’s site: ‘The perfection of masculinity. Monarque is a fragrance inspired by a feeling of absolute power. The top notes launch citrus and bamboo in an explosion. Its irresistible heart is made of ginger and nutmeg and gives way to an intriguing base of sandalwood, amber, and musks, thus revealing an attractive and powerful man. Amazing and surprising, Monarque embodies charisma and glory.’ According to my nose, it’s somewhat similar to Paco Rabanne’s Pure XS, especially because of the very present ginger note, but Monarque is more citrusy and soft. I like it for daily wear; it smells fresh and elegant.
