Lancaster is a gem for its quality-to-price ratio and because it’s not linear. It has three phases: a fresh, vital opening like a Mediterranean forest, a middle with smoky and woody notes that provide security, and a surprising amber, sensual, and softly animalic dry down that attracts compliments. With reformulations and the loss of synthetic algalia, it has lost some of that sexy edge, but it remains a great chypre at a good price.
The story of Lancaster begins with the friendship between two prisoners in a concentration camp: chemist Eugène Frezzati and businessman George Wurtz, a Lancaster bomber pilot. They founded the brand in Monaco in 1946, launching their first fragrance in 1977, followed by this Eau Concentrée—a unisex floral chypre. It’s easy to wear, soft, and understated. The opening is herbal and green with lavender, bergamot, coriander, thyme, and basil, evoking a fresh, juicy Provençal countryside vibe. It then transitions into a gentle florality with a 1920s aesthetic. As it dries down, the resinous chypre emerges with labdanum, sandalwood, and moss, layered over an indolic base that adds complexity. It recalls Guerlain with its vanilla and lily-of-the-valley notes. The sillage is moderate, but on my skin, it creates bursts in the heat. It lasts a long time, leaving a soapy, sweet trail. This is a very classy fragrance.
Lancaster Concentrée is a cologne that lives in its own time, though today it’s set apart by its uniqueness. It opens with a green, aromatic, and woody note—a tender, non-gritty blend of dark green. At first, it might be intimidating, but the alcohol fades quickly into a post-rain spring forest where pine resin drips clean and wet. Its amber isn’t dirty and pairs well with a lovely chypre character, featuring sweeter cilantro and basil without modern sweetness. It lasts long on the skin and has many phases; by evening, depending on the day, it can be quite masculine with low projection, but if you spray it generously given the price, it offers interesting sillage. It’s a dense pine forest on a cool afternoon, with the last rays of sun, inviting you to walk home. It’s a quiet forest that says goodbye, letting you sleep in the tenderness of the night. If you like a soft, clean chypre with woody tones and drops of sweet pine amber, give it a try. EDIT: The next day, it’s still on the skin—little trail, but flawless longevity.
