A citrus freshness with an elegant heart that evokes something woody. I read a description mentioning the smell of a freshly opened box of pencils. It’s a pretty poetic and accurate description because the iris root note has the ability to draw out wood where there isn’t any. It’s an herbal ingredient that adds sobriety and distinction whenever it appears. In this case, the iris root along with the musk and the citrus part result in a fresh, luminous fragrance that’s very common but with a really beautiful touch of natural elegance. The contradiction works.
For now, Esprit de Contradiction could be one of the kid-friendly scents in the collection, but it’s perfect for adults. First, what a great bite of mandarin when you open it, a realistic note that lasts almost the whole time. Then, well: a very fresh, linear bathroom scent, ideal for summer and for feeling in a good mood, without complications, thanks to its slightly salty, crisp (undeclared) note and the tied-up citrus festival. It’s very pleasant, but it has a trail and longevity that’s very skin-close.
Top notes of gin tonic with a muted iris dry-down. It leaves a neutral, correct, and wearable musky blend, just like everything from Maison Matine. If you’re not like me, if you don’t enjoy the quirky stuff or are scared of being too loud, maybe you should pay attention to this brand. It depresses me a bit, though it smells luxurious and comforting. Like an airport in an ad or a bed and breakfast. The potato note is light and crisp. It makes me think of what they say: when potatoes arrived in the New World, some experimental nobles served them raw, shaped into rose petals. Then people got indigestion. Still, with a good gin tonic, things would have gone down better.
A musky base with iris and that weird, sticky scent from the iris root. It smells soft and would suit a child, but it’s my different pick, far from the typical citrus of this type. I want to wear it to the bathroom, just like other scents from this house that don’t bother anyone and everyone loves.
