  If you love jasmine, you might like this, but it’s a very boring fragrance that smells like a dozen overused formulas of soft jasmine. It starts with a burst of jasmine and orange blossom that, combined with ylang and its velvety sweetness, recreate a young, smooth, and green neroli before it turns sour. It’s not ugly, but it doesn’t really matter to me. In the mid-phase, the non-indolic white flowers mellow and sweeten with a warm, vintage musk. It’s a sweet jasmine, not cloying, with hints of cream and sophisticated floral notes, cheerful and natural; in my mind, it’s a sprig of gardenia, greener and crunchier than jasmine, which, as it matures, picks up fecal nuances. If you catch the trail on clothes or the cap, it reminds me of Cabotine, inspired by Tendre Poison. It smells good if you like jasmine, feels decent quality but nothing to go crazy over, and adds almost nothing at 2€ per ml. At that price, a perfume should offer more—a new composition, a touch, a fantasy explosion… Grand Bal could perfectly cost fifty euros. I won’t say twenty, because it has more quality than a lesser-line jasmine, but nothing to blow your mind since you’ve smelled this in two hundred places. The name is well-chosen, making you think of a great puppet or Venetian ball, but everything is light and diffuse, without baroque flourishes. PS: It doesn’t resemble J’Adore at all; it lacks much fruit skin. It would be more like a distant cousin, more elegant and refined than Tendre Poison. PS II: Average sillage, good longevity. PS III: Edit to add that in the 2018 reformulation, they added a peach note that isn’t here.
