  • Dahn Oudh Al Shams is the best authentic Indian oud you can get for $70. Calling it just ‘oud’ is a mistake; it’s Indian oud with the tradition of pre-distillation soaking, giving it a fermented, animal, and milky profile. A gem: upon application, it emits animal, earthy, and medicinal notes. As it develops, the medicinal note fades and the wood rises with fecal and earthy touches. In dry down, it shines as a woody, milky perfume with a slight corral reminiscence. I bought it on eBay for $70 with shipping to Mexico; it took 4 months, and I got home without even remembering I ordered it. Buy blind for a pleasant surprise: a mystical and enigmatic perfume in my country where oud is rare. You won’t get many compliments, but you’ll command respect without a doubt. Monumental, dominant, and opaque to other perfumes. Buy blind if you like Indian oud or want something cheap and authentic. The downside: no decants to try, but I recommend it if you’re looking for something wild.

  • Hombre_Perfumado

One of the hardest and wildest fragrances I’ve worn in a long time. I gambled on buying this blind and won. It’s a super rough, fecal, animal, and medicinal oud that reminds me of a stable. It also smells like olives, like the scent drifting through the window while driving past an oil industry. Insane performance and huge projection; be careful wearing it in summer. The price is ridiculous for the quality. If you want to smell The Night by FM, this is the closest thing. Never buy this blind.

I’ve read it smells like olive, and there’s some truth to that. It has an aroma of an olive mill, of residue and leftover pits. It’s not easy to wear or suitable for every occasion. Today alone, several people told me it smells like a mechanic’s garage, gasoline, a stable, or burnt wood… But my little niece hit the nail on the head: ‘Uncle… you smell like sheep poop.’

I’ve read it smells like olives, and he’s right. It has an aroma of an olive mill, of leftovers and olive waste. It’s not easy to wear or suitable for all occasions. Today, several people said it smelled like a mechanic’s garage, gasoline, or a stable. But my niece nailed it: ‘Uncle, you smell like sheep poop.’

  • I think this is the ceiling for accessible, non-pure oud. I wanted something without the ‘makeup,’ just for enjoyment, and this is perfect: it smells like oud, oud, and more oud. It has a stable vibe and an acidic touch. Better for personal use; whether worn alone or layered, that stable, uninitiated-unfriendly side won’t hide, and non-initiates will hate it. Totally off the table for socializing.

  • While backpacking in Rome, a young guy explained to me that perfume hasn’t always been clean—it’s animal. He showed me Zohan by Penhaligon’s and I fell in love with oud. I searched for pure versions, without rose or leather, until I found a decant of The Night by Frederic Malle. Learning that Dahn Oudh Al Shams is just the base of that perfume, I grabbed it instantly. It didn’t disappoint: it’s pure oud, potent like olive oil, with beastly projection and notes of feces, smoke, and milk. A gem if you like oud, and for the price, it’s worth buying blind.

  • Brutal quality Indian oud, but beware: if you don’t love the fecal or challenging side, stay away. I wear it alone at night and it transports me to another sensory dimension; I feel more alive than ever.

  • Indian Oud is absolutely top-tier in quality, but fair warning: if you can’t handle fecal or challenging oud scents, don’t even think about it. I only wear it at night, and it transports me to another sensory dimension; few smells make me feel this alive.
