The opening and the first 15 minutes are the best. Sprayed directly, all the fruits come out bright and sparkling, but soon they give way to 15 glorious minutes of smoky birch, tonka, and a mossy herbaceous base. It feels cold, serious, almost gothic, but the fruits keep it light. Then it becomes soapy and powdery, which is fine, but I prefer it before that. Everything is underscored by Bortnikoff’s famous musk: fatty, animalic, and urinary. Even though I don’t like real deer musk, it smells great mixed with moss, tonka, and birch.

  • Another favorite from the house. It reminds me a bit of Sayat Nova, surely due to the peach, but this one is superior thanks to the natural musk that you can smell buzzing all the time. A modernized Chypre, very elegant and distinct.

  • Bortnikoff, with its own style and more classic than other indie brands, brings us a Chypre with amber notes. It’s very well thought out, revolving around a clear base of resins, tonka, moss, and birch tar, all rounded out by the musk. It starts with citrus notes of bergamot and orange, but the base dominates the dry down along with a touch of peach. It’s very balanced, warm, and contained; nothing is strident, not even the birch tar stands out too much. Great perfume and raw materials, though it doesn’t suit me. Recommended for lovers of classic and serene scents. Cheers!

  • I was looking for an ideal Chypre and, after testing Chypre du Nord because of its resemblance to Diaghilev, I ordered it. It smells good, dries down to something warm and spicy with cinnamon and fruits; it’s a proper Chypre and I like it, but it doesn’t give me that same smile Diaghilev does. The same goes for Chypre Palatin. I’m thinking of stopping here and sticking with the king, Diaghilev. I’ll edit this later once I’ve used it for real, looking for a cold weather vibe.
