Descripción

Bijou Romantique by Etat Libre d'Orange is an oriental floral fragrance for women. Launched in 2012, this olfactory composition was created by perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui. Its pyramidal structure unfolds with top notes of ylang-ylang, pink pepper, bergamot, and lemon; an intimate floral heart featuring iris, statice, and coconut; and a warm, woody base blending benzoin, vanilla, and vetiver.

Thanks to a comment from Cnidaria in our Facebook group, I went back to this fragrance at my local shop. People compare it to the famous Shalimar; I can’t quite say if it smells exactly the same, since it hasn’t smelled like Shalimar for three centuries, but I can assure you that, unlike most of this house’s scents (which are usually aggressive), this one is truly romantic. What strikes me most is how the vanilla works: it’s not cloying, but rather quite wild. There’s also a slight powdery nuance, perhaps from the iris. In my opinion, it’s a worthy representative of the Oriental Floral family, nothing more. If you’re a woman looking for something friendly, romantic, high-quality, yet little-known, you’re almost obligated to try it.

Bijou Romantique is a phrase on my skin: more today than yesterday. A sparkling citrus and bergamot opening, with a touch of pepper, lets the fragrance breathe before it takes hold of you. I’ve never found such grace in this house; thanks to Karyukai, I’ve found this jewel that evokes my favorite Shalimar. It differs because its opening is citrusy, free, and light, but seconds later the resins and vanilla, caressed by a modern, powdery iris, wrap around you like an ancient story updated for today. It doesn’t overwhelm me, even though Shalimar doesn’t either. The sweet tones become more powdery, and by replacing the incense with benzoin resins, it gains gentleness, becoming an ideal skin perfume for those who loved Shalimar but found it too leathery. Its finish is soapy and soft; pity that it doesn’t last long on my skin; maybe it performs better on others. I feel modern with the charisma of oriental scents from distant lands.
