Thanks to a friend who still has a bottle and generously shared a sample with me, I was able to try it. It confirmed my opinion: it’s a huge loss that Ungaro Pour L’homme (or Ungaro I) and Ungaro pour L’homme II were discontinued, and the surviving Ungaro III was weakened. Its opening is atypical: despite having citrus notes like bergamot and lemon, the lead is carried by a potent powdery lavender with green notes; the citrus gets overshadowed. At 3 hours, carnation dominates along with statice. At 7 hours, the powdery florals remain strong, with a hint of beautiful oakmoss. At 12 hours, a musky-ambery finish with some tonka and oakmoss. It’s one of the best floral fragrances I’ve tried; certain parts remind me of Lauder for Men, Il de Lancetti, a bit of Safari by Ralph Lauren, and Salvador (1992) by Salvador Dalí. Its intermediate stage and dry-down were marvelous, lasting over 15 hours with a potent to moderate sustained trail, using 1 ml. It’s elegant, old-school, for formal wear, and usable in all seasons except very hot summers. If you see it forgotten on an old shelf and value classics like I do, I recommend giving it a try, as it’s hard to find fragrances of this character in today’s designer perfumeries. If you value masculine florals and an elegant fragrance that didn’t need woods to achieve complexity, this is for you.

You’re absolutely right; it’s a shame they took it off the market; it was a jewel as an eau de toilette.

  • Oh, what memories this marvel brings back! What a pity it no longer exists. I don’t understand how, being so fabulous, it couldn’t survive until today like some of its contemporaries, such as Azzaro or Paco Rabanne.

  • At least I’m not the only one who thinks it’s a crime that this fragrance was discontinued. In my opinion, it was the best perfume by Emanuel Ungaro. I don’t know any perfume that resembles it. Somewhere I see people pointing to Polo and Tsar as similar, but the truth is they don’t resemble each other in the slightest. Maybe a note, but nothing comparable. In fact, it would be a great contribution to point out any perfume that is truly identical (or almost).

What a marvel and majesty! It’s one of those men’s perfumes that drives me crazy, similar to JOOP! HOMME, not identical but following the same path. It’s rose talc, honey, sandalwood, carnation, a very subtle and balanced lavender that isn’t the star, with calm citrus that provide an optimal balance. The musk, tonka bean, and amber dance like the three Graces in a Renaissance painting. It smells incredibly handsome and divine, very much in the style of my glorious HABIT ROUGE by Guerlain. I know I found it in a fine dupe composition, as the original is nothing now; I have a mini bottle from years ago, and they smell identical, two drops are the same. I love it because it reminds me of Dior Diorescence. Oh my god, what beauty, spectacular class, and elegant sensuality. It lasts forever, has a beastly trail, and wonderful longevity, drying to a powdery cream. A true work of art!

  • This is a fragrance you never stop smelling; every time you test it, you discover new notes. It’s timeless, sometimes modern, fresh, with a bitter floral base that’s astringent yet has a sweet and masculine touch. It reminds me that the perfumer here took the root idea to create Sauvage much later. No doubt, this is much better.

  • It smells like my dad at his best: full beard, leather jacket, and boots. When I was a kid, I saw him as a superhero with a beautiful wife and two kids, at the peak of his life. Every time I smell it, I relive that childhood and that heroic figure :´). It’s a nostalgic and precious scent. Just a heads-up, I wouldn’t wear it myself because it smells very vintage; anyone who doesn’t know much about perfumes will tell you I smell like an older adult.
