Oeillet Bengale by Aedes de Venustas is an oriental fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2014, this composition was created by perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux. Upon release, the fragrance unfolds with a warm, exotic spice accord featuring cloves, black pepper, cinnamon, turmeric, saffron, and cardamom. The heart reveals a floral-fruity harmony where floral notes intertwine with white pepper, rose, and strawberry. The base completes the olfactory pyramid with a sweet, woody foundation built from benzoin, labdanum, balsam of Peru, and vanilla.

It’s strange that a fragrance inspired by carnations doesn’t carry the real essence. It’s clever, nostalgic, and has a retro vibe, evoking old-school feminine perfumes; it feels deliciously modern, almost avant-garde and inspiring, though also tremendously masculine for today. It gives me the same sensation as Vitriol d’Oeillet by Lutens. The opening is a bit chaotic, but soon the accords come together well: here, the spices, eugenol, pepper, and cinnamon notes overpower the florals and rose. Everything evolves into a beautiful balsamic, smoky, and moderately sweet drydown, making Oeillet Bengale a good fragrance in this phase. Still, I stick with the velvety, complex softness of Vitriol d’Oeillet. Rating: 6.5
