Musk Dana (what a curious name for an heiress to no fortune) had her stovetop as a vanity and bleach as her room spray. Her stepmother, Chanel, and her stepsisters, Dior and Guerlain, had her scrubbing floors from dawn till dusk. Besides, those harpies wouldn’t stop calling Musk Dana a vulgar men’s cologne, not the proper lady’s fragrances they proclaimed to the four winds. But Musk Dana felt more Dana Musk, a cheerful, dreamy girl, like any white musk that knows its worth. Her stepsisters’ witches told her she smelled like nothing; and partly, they were right. Dana Musk smells faint, let’s not lie. According to them, she was of low birth. “Grocery store,” “Cheap,” they called her. “You’re not worth a penny.” And the truth is, Dana Musk was cheap. There were cheaper ones, but cheap she was. That said, Dana Musk liked to reverse her name order (Dana Musk instead of Musk Dana) because she felt quite feminine. At most, unisex. But not macho. Refined, she would say. It’s true that when you first met her, you sensed a certain acrid, bitter aroma, pleasant but a bit rough. She wasn’t to blame for having to cook the family dinner, a pot of bergamot and galbanum. And although no one knew, she also added thyme, rosemary, and some broom. “Rough,” her stepsisters—Dior and Guerlain—would exclaim, but Dana Musk would sulk because that first impression was just that: a first impression. Because in the blink of an eye, soft floral notes slightly woody would discreetly envelop her. But Dana Musk wasn’t named that for a random whim. She also smelled of white musk. Softly, soapy, discreetly. Everything about her was restrained and humble. Her aromatic presence didn’t last long. Very little. So much so that whoever knew her would soon forget her. At best, a faint evocative memory, sweet floral woody, the kind you have to press your nose to the skin to detect. And meanwhile, Dana Musk kept scrubbing floor after floor, playing the lottery, to escape her miserable life. Because blue princes didn’t exist back then. Well, they don’t now either.
