Have you worn Montaigne?

Tell us how it opens, how it settles on your skin, how long it lasts and when you wear it.

  1. I picked it up from an online outlet store and paid a song. It smells like a baroque oriental jewel—beautiful but not loud, very elegant for this winter. On my skin, it lasts about four or five hours and leaves a trail reminiscent of old-fashioned bar soap. I’m happy with my blind buy.

I stumbled upon this by chance on a website; I loved the bottle, the name, and the brand. Everything felt so ‘comme il faut’ that I was surprised by the price. I looked up reviews and read nothing but praise, especially on Fragrantica, so I bought it. The opening is soft, then cilantro bursts out with notes of bitter orange and mint. Later, sandalwood comes in and settles. I can’t separate the florals; up close it smells of cilantro and sandalwood, while from a distance it’s like low scrubland with rockrose, rosemary, and thyme. A wild, revitalizing scent, nothing excessive. I wear it occasionally. Those calling it ‘sun in a bottle’ are exaggerating, and those comparing it to La Nuit de Noel are wrong (my vintage is magical; I haven’t tried the new version). I’d give Montaigne a 3 out of 5. Maybe it’ll improve with another test. The longevity is excellent, and the trail is nice without being overwhelming (or I hope so—I need to ask).
