Monsieur Carven by Carven is a chypre floral fragrance for men. This creation was launched in 1978 under the olfactory direction of Raymond Chaillan. The olfactory pyramid unfolds with top notes of aldehydes, neroli, rosemary, bergamot, and lemon; a heart composed of sandalwood, jasmine, patchouli, cinnamon, carnation, rose, vetiver, and iris root; and a base that evokes coconut, musk, oakmoss, myrrh, leather, labdanum, and vanilla.

  • It’s fascinating to learn that Raymond Chaillan, before working on Monsieur Carven, created Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium. This explains the connection between the two fragrances: they share notes of coconut, cinnamon, myrrh, carnation, rose, patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla, and citrus. The opening bursts with a significant dose of citrus that, within seconds, mutates into intense cinnamon with hints of patchouli, coconut, a carnation, and prominent moss. As time passes, the sweet and warm spices emerge from the depths, bringing part of Opium’s DNA to the surface. Still, Monsieur Carven doesn’t dive as deep into the spicy side as Opium and lacks that incense note. Carven puts its own stamp on the soft moss, patchouli, cinnamon, carnation, and vanilla-scented sandalwood. What encrypted coincidences we can find in the world of perfumery.

A hidden gem outside the vintage circles that deserves all the respect. It’s a perfume of its time, clearly a child of the late 70s: heavy and potent, yet refined and elegant. The opening overflows with aldehydes that, when sprayed instead of dabbed on, become sharp and obvious. That aldehydic explosion soon gives way to citrus, floral notes, and the assertive touch of algalia and oakmoss. It’s a declaration of war that will frighten anyone not familiar with these scents. The neroli is well implemented; though not overpowering, it adds a sharp edge that harmonizes with the floral and spicy notes, creating a sensual and masculine matrix that will make you keep smelling the application point. The result is a unique aroma, almost androgynous, but the civet fills this elixir with a sexy, exaggerated, and primal vibe. As it dries down, the leather and castoreum steer the fragrance in a more virile direction, with an old-school playboy style. Another discontinued diamond; perhaps its too-classic beauty no longer appeals to modern markets, or the original formula became too difficult or costly to reproduce. We’ll never know.
