Masculin 2 Black Instant has been a notable discovery, a fougère in maximum expression, a ‘master of fresh air,’ with radiant green and soft moss going beyond what one would expect for the ridiculous price. The sensation is finding oneself among forests with moss-covered stems over a meadow full of herbs. Black Instant smells incredibly ‘fine,’ densely intertwined, well-coordinated, and evokes memories of long walks on warm autumn or spring days in nature. It smells like a noble classic, distinguished, never intrusive but well-executed. A man who knows what he wants. Sillage and longevity are moderate; as it dries, I notice a slightly talc-like base. If you look at the price, you might think it’s a steal and wonder if it’s worth it. Please don’t let that dissuade you. It deserves a chance and if you love this type of aroma, it might surprise you. Approved.

  • Classic barbershop fougère, straight from the book. Launched in 2010? Or is it a Fragrantica error, or whoever brought this to market in the 21st century was a daredevil. Everything screams 80s in Black Instant: the oval bottle with the huge plastic cap that doesn’t close well, the glass and liquid color, and above all, the scent. It features abundant lavender, predominant and rare not to be listed. Powdery, acrid, and soapy lavender that reminds you of shaving foams. There’s also a green note, like anise but more vegetal and lively, close to fennel, which bothers me in the mid-phase but doesn’t last. Projection and sillage are very good for 2/3 hours, then it settles into a classic amber with slight woody touches like sandalwood, where it lives for another 4 hours. Vetiver is completely absent; I don’t understand the votes. It has similarities to classics: Drakkar Noir, Azzaro Pour Homme, and Versace L’Homme. It has a bit of each without obviously copying any. It doesn’t smell high-quality; quite the opposite, it’s plastic but well-orchestrated. At 5€ for 100ml, it’s a gift for lovers of classic fougères (smells discontinued). In enclosed spaces, it overwhelms me if I use more than one spray; it’s more enjoyable outdoors, away from the heat. Maybe I’m not making it clear if I like it or not; I have mixed feelings and don’t even know myself.

  • What a great surprise. Green aroma with lots of lavender, a powdery and sweet touch, but always in the range of old-school barbershops. Ideal for any season. The longevity isn’t bad: it projects well for the first two hours and lasts about 5 or 6 hours without issues. The price is worth highlighting, around 5 or 6 €, and although the bottle isn’t the best (cap that doesn’t close, no embellishments, rough and vintage design), that actually makes it more appealing. I definitely recommend it if you’re a lover of 80s barbershop fougères like Drakkar Noir, Lomani, or Obsession/Brut types, with that sweet undertone. Give it a shot.

  • What a shame it’s discontinued because this is incredible. It’s retro to the max, so much so it feels like an intentional stereotype. It seems the perfumers thought: ‘Guys, let’s do a literal reconstruction of 80s chest-hair fougères. Throw in all the herbs, make it minty and citrusy to the extreme, imagine your dad shaving with Floid and revving a Ford Taurus to get to work.’ And my god, the best recent evocation of those scents, absolutely mind-blowing. It’s not an accident; it’s deliberate and they hit the nail on the head. Outstanding. I love this scent. Retro enough to say it to the point of exhaustion. I think along with Ted Lapidus, these are the two most retro perfumes out there today. Plus, the performance is fantastic, a real marvel.
