Lime Basil & Mandarin by Jo Malone London is an aromatic citrus fragrance for men and women. Launched in 1999 under the olfactory direction of Jo Malone, this composition features top notes that unfold a vibrant freshness with lime, mandarin, and bergamot; the heart reveals herbaceous and floral elegance with basil, thyme, lilac, and iris; while the base notes provide depth and longevity thanks to vetiver and patchouli.

This fragrance simply doesn’t smell on my skin. There’s something that resembles lime, but not especially “realistic,” very far away in the distance. Totally ethereal for a completely absurd price.
On my skin, it smells like nothing. There’s a hint of lime, but it’s very vague and unrealistic, as if it’s miles away. It’s super ethereal, but the price is insane.
Jo Malone is one of my favorites… I just finished this bottle, and on me, it has great sillage and projection… completely unisex. Very rich!!
Smells spectacular. But for me, it doesn’t justify the price with its longevity, as it barely lasts an hour on my skin.
Lime, Basil & Mandarin is a citrus aromatic fragrance. It opens with a citrus blend combined with spices, and after a few minutes, the thyme note emerges, which I think stands out the most along with the basil. It’s mainly a daytime scent, though the spicy notes mean it could work on cool days, just not cold ones. It’s curious that despite being a citrus fragrance, the citrus notes don’t stand out until you press your nose to the skin (or at least, that’s how it developed on me); throughout its entire evolution, I perceived the green and spicy notes more. It’s not a bad fragrance, however, given its high cost, there are better alternatives available.
Friday afternoon: I run out of gel and head to buy Magno. At the local drugstore, I run into someone I don’t want to see: the only person I’ve ever loved. As usual, polite words that say she’s moved on hundreds of pages while I’m still stuck on the same chapter. I step outside; it’s sunny and a nice afternoon, but I know my weekend is ruined. That night, I watch a show that bores me by the second episode. I try to read, do chores. I’d even start dancing like crazy if it helped me stop thinking. Saturday morning: I go out to work out. The day is beautiful. In the afternoon, a friend calls. His girlfriend has single friends, and sometimes they set me up on blind dates. It never works, not this time either. I can’t connect with anyone. My attitude isn’t helping. A burger and back home. Sunday: the worst day of a broken weekend. Clouds gather, but it’s still hot. I work all day. I put on records. I try to read but have no desire. I watch a movie and lose the plot after fifteen minutes. It’s hard to make it to evening. It’s hard to find things to do; I just want to lie down and sleep. Every minute hurts, every second feels like a horror movie. Monday: I just wake up when the mailman rings. A package from London! Wow. It’s a nice day. My brother sent it; it’s his birthday gift. I open it: a bottle of Jo Malone, Lime, Basil & Mandarin. I’ve never tried it, but I know it’s his “signature scent.” Good. Off to the gym. I talk to a girl (I think I like her). I talk to her mom (I think I liked her). I train hard. With my weightlifting buddy, we chat about Frank Zane, Franco Columbu, and Phil Heath. I leave the gym overflowing with endorphins, happy and at peace for the first time since Friday. It’s not a big deal. But I know everything will change when I get home, have to work, and see only gray storm clouds through my window. I shower and put on Lime, Basil & Mandarin. At first, it’s gorgeous, with an ultra-realistic lime splashed with citrus-mandarin and delicate floral notes. It’s surprising that this cologne comes from foggy London. Delicious, very fresh, summery, radiant. As the hours pass, it evolves into a more classic tone with stronger vetiver and patchouli, reminding me of Armani Eau pour Homme. Soft trail, lasts about five or six hours. Not bad for a cologne. I think it’s excellent. It’s very expensive. I’d pay anything to get out of this hole.
Quality. A breath of fresh air for lazy hot days. Optimistic. The trail is subtle but hits the spot just right. Lasts well. Unisex, with a slightly more masculine edge.
For fans of this Jo Malone, I recommend the budget version of Aire de Sevilla Azahar by Instituto Español. I was gifted a decant of ‘Lime, Basil and Mandarin’ and it reminded me of the scent my grandmother left on her clothes with her usual cologne. That cologne doesn’t smell like neroli nor is it fresh, its trail is bitter, more masculine, and reminds me of the bitter orange leaf rather than the flower. Although they don’t share notes, the trail of both is very similar, perhaps due to those bitter basil and thyme notes.
Smells good, but for me it’s like eating an orange with my hands.
It smells like window cleaner.
Smells like window cleaner.
Out of all the Jo Malones I’ve tried, this has the best performance on my skin. I wear it in the workplace during hot summer days. It seems very fresh and elegant. In a coworker’s words, “it smells like a boss,” and she said that after I’d been wearing it for several hours. So for me, it’s become a must-have for hot weather.
Of all the Jo Malones I’ve tried, this has the best performance on my skin. I use it at work in the summer, very fresh and elegant. A colleague told me it ‘smells like a boss’ after a few hours, so it’s already a must-have for the heat season.
Good quality, smells naturally of citrus and grass. I was hesitating to buy it, but I backed out remembering it’s super similar to Citrus by Herbíssimo, especially in the heart phase. Herbíssimo has good longevity and costs 10 euros for 100ml. Sorry Jo, but I’m sticking with Boyd.
It’s the same scent as its sibling Grapefruit by Jo Malone.
I had a sample and we tried it today. My boyfriend didn’t like it much; it smelled like plants (logical, haha), he gave it a 5.2. To me, although very herbal, it smells great. Super unisex and perfect for spring/summer.
It leaves me light and vibrant, perfect for the heat. Fresh without losing complexity, smells like lemonade with ice under the sun. The projection is moderate, just what I’m looking for. The bad thing is it doesn’t last long, but I think I’ll buy it again.
It leaves me feeling super light and energized, perfect for hot days. Fresh but with character, it smells like a cold lemonade under the sun. The projection is just right—exactly what I was looking for, though it fades quickly. Despite that, I’ll buy it again.
I tried it today and loved it; it’s luminous and energetic. On my skin, it’s still enjoyable after 8 hours, ideal for spring and summer. The only downside is the high price, so I’ll think about it.
The king of citrus worldwide: sparkling, green, clean, with that soapy touch that gives energy. After 15 years in my life, it’s my faithful companion every week. Pure freshness and neatness. Simply perfect.
