I love this scent: fresh, rich, optimistic, and full of sunshine. It brings back memories of summer afternoons in jeans and a white tee, strolling through freshly mowed parks. At first, it smells like fresh grass or green banana peel, then shifts to a soft, green floral. There’s just a tiny sweet undertone, like green apple or a hint of pear… It’s totally unisex. My only gripe is that it lasts so little; I’ve almost used it as a splash, literally bathing in it, and it does nothing more (like 4711). They say the “Grass Body Mist” is more potent than this “eau de toilette,” something I need to try. Just in case, I have the new 2020s bottle, not the 90s one.
The Grass, I forgot I even had it, and my wife owned it twice—a real gem. It’s the most natural, real cut-grass scent I’ve ever smelled in a perfume. (The bottle in the photo is an intermediate version, more recent than the original but not the latest).
Gap’s Grass has been discontinued for years. It might resonate a lot with 90s American teens (who alternated between Dream and Heaven) before becoming outdated, a victim of its own success. Originally, it wasn’t made by Gap, but by a Californian perfumer whose formula was bought to mass-produce it. It’s a frankly successful cologne, very realistic. It smells like freshly cut or watered grass, without sweet nuances or excessive earthiness. There was a reformulation, and the last version lasted very little on skin and even less on clothes. Still, it was refreshing, realistic (almost a perfumery realism exercise), sober, and a huge hit in summer or spring. Without citrus or sweet notes, I don’t get why it only comes back occasionally as a special edition. Maybe this style, similar to Calvin Klein’s Truth for Men but more austere, just isn’t trendy anymore, much to my dismay. What is sold at an affordable price is the body spray version, and unexpectedly, it’s more potent than the eau de toilette—something raw but maximally realistic. Watered grass without restrictions. I really like it and revisit it every summer to use it.
