  Would any woman today dare to wear a blend of rosewood, Sri Lankan cardamom, Egyptian jasmine, Florentine iris, May rose, vetiver, calendula, cilantro, periwinkle, oakmoss, sandalwood, and patchouli? These are the notes in a bottle of Jacomo Rare Parfum EDT that I stumbled upon during a blind buy at an old perfume shop. It’s identical to the photos above on Fragrans: a strong yet not overpowering scent worth hunting if you’re looking for a truly elegant, classic, and rare fragrance. Comparing it to so many modern options fills me with melancholy. Here we have a moss and wood base with spices and flowers that bring to life a chypre transforming into an unreachable paradisiacal garden, with great projection, charm, and character. A dazzling example of an energetic retro scent, nothing tame—can you tame it? The notes blend and flow so seamlessly that it’s hard to detect the transitions. It’s one of those fragrances with so many facets you can’t even summarize it in a single sentence. The smoky sensation is likely due to very dry vetiver; the perfume starts spicy but after more than two hours becomes soft and tranquil, with creamy wood notes interwoven with warm flowers, still faintly spiced. With this fragrance, the periwinkle and oakmoss caress and warm your skin so well that it’s hard to stop smelling such an aroma. Something outside the usual schemes that has transported me back to the unreachable golden age of perfumery.
