  Clair de Musc opens with a strong hit of aldehydes, even though they’re not listed on the ingredients—they’re very noticeable. I’ve read comparisons to a softer, lighter Chanel No. 5, and it’s partially true, at least at the start. It also has a faint dirty, animalic scent, barely there, with an almost imperceptible citrus note. Gradually, the aldehydes fade and neroli joins the iris; the scent becomes more powdery and soapy, giving that clean, fresh feeling. It’s like a blend of bath soaps, lotions, and powders. In the dry-down, it settles into a musky, vanilla-like scent that hugs the skin and lasts quite a while. I think it’s safe to wear in any weather and is 100% unisex. The opening does lean more feminine due to the aldehydes and that Chanel connection, but once it dries down, it feels truly unisex. I never felt uncomfortable at any point. The performance is just okay: it lasts for hours, and the first half-hour is noticeable, but afterward, it clings tightly to the skin. I’m left mixed. It smells good, pleasant, and distinct from what I’ve heard of Lutens’ line, with a touch of elegance, but I wouldn’t buy it. Trying it once is fine, but I wouldn’t use it if I had a full bottle. It’s a pretty scent and worth trying at least once.
