Shiseido's Feminite du Bois is a woody oriental fragrance for women. Launched in 1992, this composition was created by Pierre Bourdon and Christopher Sheldrake. The top notes unfold with cedar, cinnamon, honey, ginger, carnation, and rose; the heart reveals plum, cloves, beeswax, cardamom, peach, violet, and orange blossom; while the base notes settle on cedar, cinnamon, sandalwood, benzoin, vanilla, and musk.

Wonderful, special, and a Japanese scent. I’ve always thought a geisha should smell like this.
Plum and honey giving it an alcoholic, creamy aspect of jasmine and carnation, rose talc, sweet wood, and soft musk like a caress… nothing jarring or out of place. It’s as powerful as the force of Mount Fuji and as delicate as the breeze moving a wind chime… it’s beauty and warmth. Wonderful in every way. Moderate sillage, very potent in the first hour, lasting about five hours. Unfortunately, it’s discontinued; the Lutens version is similar in structure and potency. Some say it’s like Dolce Vita, but I can’t be sure since I don’t remember that scent… it definitely brought back memories of Arabie, Kenzo Jungle, and Poison at its launch, and Femme de Rochas as it dried… fruity, spicy, and woody floral. I owned it and haven’t been able to find it again, but I have Dior’s Dolce Vita to console myself with the olfactory memory. It feels like how Japanese forests smell and how a geisha smells after stepping out of a temple consecrated to Buddha, where this exquisite blend has been poured into an incense burner, and its magical smoke perfumes her kimono.
A new stop in the vintage perfume world. Feminité du Bois wraps you in a cloak of ancient memories: dark, woody, earthy, and mysterious. Almost no one makes such a bold statement. Some notes dominate, while others hit hard like peach, plum, cinnamon, and clove over a subtle cedar. As it dries, the vanilla expands with a touch of musk. Dense and striking; I detect a hint of coriander that, mixed with flowers and fruit, creates an undeniable feminine scent. On one hand, it’s original and mystical, warm and feminine (smells like honey and beeswax, a brittle sweetness, just like the bottle’s design), contrasting with the bitterness of the spices. All of it is woven together by a moving balsamic wood. It’s a message of mysterious depth. The cedar and clove linger for hours, reinforcing that woody-spicy side against the delicacy of rose, orange blossom, jasmine, and violet. It all creates a calming, majestic atmosphere that transports you to an Eastern forest guided by a geisha in a Feng Shui garden. A fragrance that makes you feel different.
