It’s not perfume, it’s Lush conditioner. I bought it in 2020 when I was 23 working as an AuPair and fell in love with that marked spice scent I couldn’t identify: tonka bean. Since then, it’s my obsession. I love washing my hair in winter and stepping into warm places; the heat activates the spice and I feel cozy, calm, happy, and luxurious. It gets deeply embedded in my wool coat. Since fall and winter are cold and lonely, I use tricks to avoid my body going into hibernation. Tonka bean is one of them, along with musk. It awakens the magic of this mysterious season that forces you to know yourself better by getting lost in thought. Musk is for everyday wear in conservative places; tonka bean, which to me is caramelized musk, is for festive and cheerful settings.
