The original Calvin Klein Red was already famous in the 70s, though Revlon wanted to jump in. As a newcomer, they didn’t realize it would cost them money, so they hired expert perfumers. They tested countless samples, and none pleased the investors as much; in fact, they rejected one that Ralph Lauren later bought. Both brands launched their debuts almost simultaneously. Calvin lost money, and that discarded scent—Ralph’s—became a hit. That juicy green lily-of-the-valley won the battle and buried Calvin’s dream for years. Analyzing the perfume: from the start, you notice the quality; the aldehydes spread like champagne foam with spicy peaks of iris root, lots of hyacinth, and moss. Then a rose accord emerges, dominating but not alone; it shares the throne with carnation and a softer hyacinth. The white florals in the background add an interesting creaminess. The musk prevents it from feeling flat or dirty. Woods and amber settle in as the skin interacts with the chemistry. I don’t detect much peach or raspberry, but perhaps they provide that juice-like touch to make it three-dimensional (flowers, woods, fruits). As it dries, the moss becomes more evident—slightly dry and herbal—accompanying the flowers and woods. The hyacinth and wood-toned aldehydes recall Fidji and L’Air du Temps. They’re distinct perfumes, but there’s a strong nod to the past. Probably that nostalgia is why Calvin couldn’t compete with Ralph, a classic floral yet more deconstructed. It’s an aromatic jewel, nothing new but perfectly executed with balance. Years later, thirsting for revenge, Calvin launched Obsession and conquered the scene with its advertising, bottle, and scent.
