What a pleasure it is to review this fragrance, the first by Ted Lapidus, one of his most forgotten vintage gems. Vu was born in the mid-70s, targeting the image of the autonomous, free, and rebellious woman that was all the rage. It was expected that designers would cross the line between feminine, androgynous, and masculine to grab attention and please those women. We must not forget that Lapidus was ENORME in the 70s, fashionable worldwide. The difference from similar fragrances of that era is that here, flowers are not the main focus (which makes it too androgynous and, from a modern perspective, almost masculine). When you apply a few drops to your skin, you automatically sense oakmoss as a fundamental element, mixed with a subtle bergamot, both immersed in the warm, intense sweetness of amber. But there’s more beyond the woods: later, a softly spicy herbal halo emerges, commanding attention, with a faint leather and a marked patchouli, animalistic notes but not overly so; I mean, if there’s musk or civet, they’re there, but not loud. I can also detect some iris. Its composition is so interesting, and the fact that not all its notes are immediately identifiable makes deducing its secrets fascinating. My review is about a 4 ml miniature extract. It’s a journey to another place, another quality, a very well-orchestrated scent. Vu is incredibly interesting and mysterious. I totally recommend Vu to gentlemen who enjoy androgynous vintage fragrances from past decades, and to women who want something other than a fruity note on their skin as well.
