The 1960s. Later, he earned a Master’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry in Amsterdam. Martin Gras’s career in the perfumery world began at the esteemed Roure Bertrand Dupont School (now Givaudan Perfumery School), where he honed his craft and developed his experience in chromatography.

Over the last three decades, Gras has become a prominent figure in the luxury fragrance industry, creating exceptional scents for numerous high-end brands.

After his training at the Roure Bertrand Dupont School, Martin Gras joined Dragoco, which later became part of Symrise in 2003. Gras’s first notable fragrances emerged in the mid-1980s, including Bleu Marine for Pierre Cardin, Pour Homme for Ted Lapidus, and Cerruti 1881 Pour Homme for Cerruti. These creations became best-sellers in men’s perfumery during that decade.

The 1990s saw Gras create the floral composition Daylight for the Argentine brand Gabriela Sabatini, Dalimix for Salvador Dali, and Popy Moreni Woman for the French low-cost brand Popy Moreni. In 1998, Gras introduced his most famous work, the musky and powdery Boudoir for Vivienne Westwood. Two years later, he created another fragrance for the British designer, the fruity chypre Libertine.

After developing two more compositions in the early 2000s—30cc for Chevignon and Wood Man for Bogner—Gras took a break from commercial fragrance launches for nearly a decade. In 2012, he returned to the industry with Sports Team 36 for Bogner and Abu Dhabi AUH for The Scent of Departure. Subsequently, Gras announced his retirement, and these creations were his final ones from his illustrious portfolio.

According to Martin Gras, “a perfume creator is someone capable of listening, understanding, and working as a team”. He believes that a perfumer must be skilled both in imitation and in creation. Gras thinks that some perfumers excel at imitations but lack original ideas, while others have abundant ideas but struggle to recreate them. This dual emphasis on creativity and technical skill has allowed Gras to establish himself as a leading perfumer in the luxury segment.

Martin Gras’s career is marked by collaborations with prestigious brands, such as Amouage, Salvador Dali, Cerruti, Ted Lapidus, Gabriela Sabatini, Pierre Cardin, Chevignon, Vivienne Westwood, Bogner, Popy Moreni, Succes de Paris, and The Scent of Departure. Among his most popular compositions are Boudoir by Vivienne Westwood, Lapidus Pour Homme by Ted Lapidus, 1881 Men by Cerruti, and Dalimix by Salvador Dali.
