Jean-Francois Laporte was a renowned French perfumer with significant contributions to the world of niche perfumery. He was born in France in 1948 and grew up with a passion for fragrances, which he pursued throughout his life.

Laporte began his career in the perfume industry in 1972, when he founded Sisley, which he later sold to Count Hubert D’Ornano. In 1976, he established L’Artisan Parfumeur, one of the first niche fragrance houses, where he made a name for himself by offering a new alternative to mass-market perfumes. He became known for using rare and unusual ingredients in his creations, including celery, ginger, basil, bay laurel, and osmanthus.

In 1988, Laporte founded Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier, where he continued creating elegant and refined fragrance collections using traditional recipes. He also presented his products in new and innovative ways, such as the creation of fragrant body candles.

Throughout his career, Laporte considered perfumery as a form of art and believed that perfume should be treated as a work of art. He used only the finest natural ingredients to create his fragrances, and his creations told stories about times and traditions of perfumery long forgotten.

Among some of Laporte’s most popular perfumes are L’Artisan Parfumeur Mure et Musc, Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Ambre Precieux, L’Artisan Parfumeur L’Eau du Navigateur, and L’Artisan Parfumeur Vanilia. He continued exploring the history and secrets of perfumery through his foundation, Le Jardin du Parfumeur, until his death in 2011.
