The 30s and 40s, when the US wanted to compete with Europe. White Shoulders was a global hit, but over the years and with company changes, the quality dropped. The old Evyan version smelled of narcotic white flowers with a soft base of civet, resins, and moss; refined and feminine. The current cologne is terrible: metallic and short-lived. A pure 7ml bottle I saved was much better. Comparing the two pure versions, the new one loses the old base and puts more emphasis on the florals (gardenia, lily of the valley, lilac). It has a very marked soapy note; the old one had it too, but enriched with civet and resins. The new one is flatter with stronger whites—that’s the main difference at first. Later, once they settle, they smell quite similar.
Snagged a White Shoulders set (EDT, body cream, and body wash) at a steal of a price. It’s one of my rare blind buys since I’m usually not a huge fan, but with no other way to try it and minimal cost, it turned out great. In person, I really like it; I can’t compare it to the original, but Selene’s review caught my eye. This EDT is a distinct white floral different from the ones I own, with very similar notes. On my skin, the peach really stands out—sweet and syrupy—and I agree with Selene about that soapy note that gives a clean, fresh-shower vibe. While it becomes less interesting over time on skin, it stays simple and classic, unpretentious, with a delicate touch that sweetens the whole thing. What I loved most is that it brought back memories of those scented greeting cards from my childhood. There was a stationery shop that still had stock, and I adored them; every time I bought a pack, the scent obsessed me, and I wanted to replicate it in perfumes. White Shoulders reminds me absolutely of that, so if you remember those cards and are looking for something similar, this is the fragrance closest to that memory I have.

In person, I liked it. Since I don’t have the original or a pure perfume, Selene’s review was a huge help. This EDT is a white floral different from the ones I own; on my skin, it comes out as quite a peach, sweet and syrupy. I agree with Selene on the soapy note; I like it because it gives a sense of cleanliness, like the smell right after a shower. I must say that the more it settles on skin, the less interesting it becomes, but it remains simple and classic, unpretentious, with a delicate touch that sweetens the ensemble.
