Chanel No. 5 in the US and France, Moscow Red in the USSR, and Tosca in Nazi Germany: these three fragrances were each nation’s jewel after the Great War. With the Second World War, Chanel No. 5 became the symbol of triumphant Parisian luxury. Moscow Red was the Soviet version for the masses; the Kremlin’s halls smelled of it. Tosca was the perfume of the Nazi elite’s wives; they all kept it in their vanity, yet it faded into obscurity like almost everything German from that era, with the exception of brands like Hugo Boss. Chanel No. 5 had already conquered the West. In my continent, South America, I’m perhaps the only one who knows this history that intertwines with the harsh reality of war.
