  • The problem with being a ‘groupie’ is that you start thinking the artist owes you. If the work doesn’t satisfy, you feel your trust has been violated. I’ve been a Maison Crivelli groupie for a short while; Oud Maracuja and Oud Stallion blew my mind, and I’m annoyed by the good weather since I can’t use them until autumn. I’ve smelled almost all their fragrances and applaud the intention to create something different. But I don’t get Safran Secret. I woke up uneasy on Saturday, maybe because of the pistachio croissant, but I don’t think so. Nor because of walking with my girlfriend and my dog in Milan or laughing at influencers in the Duomo. I was nervous to smell the house’s latest perfume. I was heading to Rinascente imagining its scent. Okay, some saffron, but Crivelli is never literal; it seeks friction. The name ‘Secret’ alone gave no clues. If they’re this confident with the name, I thought they’d hit a bomb. To summarize: I smelled it at 1 PM, and by 3 PM I had no appetite, even though I’d had a Spritz. This perfume can be denied sincerity. It carries saffron, yes. What I don’t know is if it carries more. It smells like walking into your grandma’s kitchen on a Sunday, halfway through cooking, sending you to set the table. It smells like paella, chicken in pepitoria, Montilla-style artichokes, fideuà with squid… all saffron-based recipes. I’m not saying it’s a bad smell, but definitely not for me. They might label it gourmand; to me, it’s a Carmencita spice jar blended in a blender. Inevitably, this groupie was disappointed. But let’s not lose faith. A kilo of saffron costs between €3,000 and €10,000. This perfume is about €215 for 50ml. Who knows, that might be where the secret of Safran Secret lies.

I really liked it. It’s perfect for the office or if you want to exude elegance. It’s distinct; reminds me of Sartorial, nothing like Oud Wood. It has a very important air; with H24 it’s like its saffroned version: green elegance versus this one. It comes with that strong feeling of dry-cleaning steam ironing suits, freshly ironed shirt scent, steam, ozone, metal, and smoke, followed by saffron that gains volume as it dries without losing that airy, metallic sensation. In its style, it’s very good.

Absolutely modern and current. Synthetic, but without the sterile lab feel; somehow natural yet distinct. It doesn’t smell like a typical perfume but develops a sophisticated aroma that envelops you. It’s a tribute to the digital age. I wonder what will remain of our favorite perfumes in the future. Safran Secret is fascinating; the notes are hard to discern, shifting like a chameleon. Sometimes licorice, then woody nuances, black tea, pepper, with that subtle rubber note and heavy saffron. These synthetic notes are so well interwoven that they never make you crinkle your nose; it’s very harmonious. Why does it smell so different after 4 hours compared to the start? You’re left with a dreamlike fragrance that captivates, a cloud of sweet spicy notes with a bright woody touch. It’s a high level of craftsmanship that either repels or hooks you. Certainly not for everyone, but Robocop would love it. Important price point, test before buying.

  • I’ve read it’s an ode to the technological age, and honestly, it is. Philosophically, it’s a symbol of today’s and tomorrow’s social paradigm. It’s original and innovative, with one foot in today and the other in the future. Don’t call me crazy, but if you hear it and reflect on it, you’ll understand. It’s an exceptional blend of spices, metal, wood, leather, and smoke tied together by saffron. It’s less heavy than its oud counterparts, more wearable for daily life. It projects a lot and lasts longer on skin, but not for summer; better for evening or night. Not everyone will like it, but those who do will love it.

It’s a dry woody scent with a good dose of vetiver. It has that metallic touch, like the steam from ironing shirts in the laundry, giving it a unique character. Over time, it warms up and softens. Personally, I wouldn’t buy it, and if I did own it, I wouldn’t use it much.
