  I’ve been waiting 5 years for the return of Russian Oud. It went through cancellations for not matching the original, lack of ingredients (especially oud), but here it is. RO2 starts with a sharp, sweaty, animalic touch from the musk and real ambergris (fading in 5 minutes). Then comes the ‘oud-cacao’ combo that makes it gourmand: woody, smoky Indian oud with lots of powdered cacao, dark chocolate over an amber/resinous base. The sweetness is perfect; it has body, it’s heavy and dense. The quality is on another level: it defends the title as the current champion. Oud Zhen came to mind immediately. Both share woody/smoky Indian oud, density, and powdery texture, plus the brand’s DNA and Russian Adam’s hand. But RO2 is a chocolatey-oud gourmand on a sweet base, while Oud Zhen is more smoky, animalic, and non-gourmand. There are reminiscent nuances, but they are distinct. It stains skin and clothes (watch out for whites), so use with caution. It’s masculine, versatile, and long-lasting. Oud Monarch by Bortnikoff is a rival with its oud-cacao, but it carries flowers, tobacco, and vanilla; it’s a great perfume, but RO2 is superior: denser, richer, more gourmand, more regal, and cheaper ($250 for 53ml, same price as the 2018 but with 3ml extra). The atomizer is incredible—total control and a uniform mist. The bottles weigh 400g (cap alone is 111g), inspired by Amouage and Guerlain. Unlike the 2018, RO2 is more chocolatey and gourmand. This classic collection has rescued the brand after boring launches that are still officially sold, something unthinkable in Areej Le Doré. Don’t you believe it? They still have Aquilaria Blossom, Civet de Nuit, and the 2022 collection on official channels. Russian Oud 2 makes me want to ditch other things; possibly the best oud-gourmand I’ve ever smelled. A masterpiece.

It’s a different league of quality: it defends the title as champion, no playin’ around. It reminded me of Oud Zhen immediately. Both use woody/smoky Indian oud, are dense and powdery, with the DNA of Russian Adam. But RO2 is a chocolatey-oud gourmand on a sweet base, while Oud Zhen is more smoky, animalic, and non-gourmand. There are familiar nuances, but they are distinct. It stains skin and clothes (watch out for whites), so apply with caution. It’s masculine, versatile, and long-lasting.   I start where Dr. No ends—a masterpiece I love more than Curtis from the same house. The composition is round, with no excesses, revolving around powdered cacao, oud, musk, and resins. Less is more. The opening vibrates with a pronounced cacao, while the drydown settles into a dark, sweet base. It’s surprising that, judging by the liquid and notes, it seems like a difficult, one-note fragrance, but it isn’t. It’s not for gym wear or sports, but for any other moment, it’s perfect. I wear it to the office, to dinners, day and night. It doesn’t invade; it just asks for cool or semi-cool weather. It comforts me and is addictive: it smells amazing. It’s a 10 in everything except price, though that’s justified by the materials. It sets the day, projects who you are, and I feel it like a second skin: mature, elegant, and with character.
