Angelique is the oriental cousin of the Poeme and Tresor family from Lancome. It starts with a crazy mix of peach and plum over a dry, sinful base, and to be honest, I’m surprised because I have no experience with that green note axis, which is the strongest element here. The heart is a white floral infusion with creamy, elegant neroli, sweetened by ylang-ylang and heliotrope (which is usually powdery but here smells like vanilla). The base is curious: pure balsamic, drowned in sandalwood instead of vanilla, with a moist touch of benzoin. In my opinion, if you know the fragrances I mentioned at the beginning, you’ll see a small similarity with Angelique (though the notes are very different); they have a similar character, incredible fruits, are super warm and long-lasting, although of course, after the first hour they have nothing to do with each other. By the way, the opening is acidic and congestive, I suppose due to the plum and the rough bergamot. Angelique is perfect for the aristocratic woman of classical Europe (17th century); I imagine a lady with a voluminous dress, wide shoulders, curly blonde hair, heavy makeup, and a fan more aesthetic than useful, and I even think Marie Antoinette would wear it if historical lines allowed. The trail and longevity are moderate, bordering on wide, although with little quantity it can be very fleeting. Personally, I think it’s well-made, but if I have to choose something from Shiseido, I’d go for Femenite du Bois. I conclude that getting it is partially impossible for foreigners from their country.
