Dark Rebel by John Varvatos is a woody oriental fragrance for men. Launched in 2015, the nose behind this composition is Rodrigo Flores-Roux. The top notes reveal rum, sugarcane, cardamom, hyssop, and helichrysum; the heart unfolds leather, fir resin, pepper, and styrax; while the base notes close with tobacco leaf, woody notes, castoreum, Akigalawood, Mexican vanilla, and juniper.

Dark Rebel by John Varvatos is new, a brand with intense fragrances. This one is good: elegant, sensual, intense, and great value. The problem is that it smells very similar to two I own: Encre Noire by Lalique (due to vetiver and cypress) and Ferrari Leather Essence (due to the leather and sweetness). I prefer the two earlier ones, but if you don’t know it and like wood, leather, and tobacco, it’s a good option.

It reminds me of native woods in a distant fireplace, sitting on a cured leather sofa with the scent of expensive whiskey floating around. Leather, liquor, woods, and earthy notes like Lalique. I would have liked the longevity to be longer, but it’s a unique scent that sets this brand apart and keeps non-mainstream fragrance fans hooked. Like JuanCarlos, I share that Encre Noire by Lalique and Ferrari Leather Essence are extraordinary and evoke memories of this perfume.

This reminds me of native woods in a distant fireplace while you’re sitting on a leather sofa, smelling of well-cured leather and expensive whiskey. It has leather, liquor, woods, and earthy notes like lalique. My only complaint is that I wish the longevity was longer, but it’s a unique scent that sets this brand apart and keeps many fans hooked who are looking for non-trivial fragrances. I agree with juancarlos: Encre Noire by Lalique and Ferrari Leather Essence are extraordinary and share memories of this perfume.

  • It would be a 10 if it lasted 6-8 hours. Great quality but poor longevity. To me, it doesn’t resemble Encre Noire or Ferrari Leather Essence at all.

  • Dark Rebel by John Varvatos smells more like leather than an oriental, starting with smoky woods that give it a dark vibe but don’t last long. Then the leather, pepper, and tobacco take over, adding real personality. You can detect a touch of vanilla that adds some sweetness. It’s very masculine and pleasant; at first it seems strong, but it fades to skin-level quickly without losing its edge. It doesn’t last long, maybe around 8 hours. I’d wear it in fall, winter, or at night in the heat because wearing it during the day would be annoying. Outside of department stores, it’s cheap, and the quality-to-price ratio is worth it.

  • John Varvatos Dark Rebel is more leather than oriental. It opens with dark, smoky woods that don’t last long, then the leather mixed with spices like pepper and tobacco gives it personality. There’s a touch of vanilla that adds some sweetness. It feels masculine and pleasant. At first, it seems strong, but it fades to skin level quickly, though it lasts at least 8 hours. I’d wear it in fall, winter, or warm nights; in heat, it would be overwhelming. Outside of department stores, it’s a good price, and the value for money is worth it.

  • Rodrigo Flores-Roux surprises with a modern feel. I was so seduced by ‘Vintage’ that I forgot to buy ‘Rebel’. It follows the line of creations outside Artisan, in a zesty spiced oriental style. There’s a beautiful balance between a leather that doesn’t overwhelm, spices, and sweetness. At first, it’s sharp: polished leather with grease giving a rubbery sensation, over woods that become dry, sweet, and spiced after 4 hours. Everything is harmonious and intense, with moments of dark freshness. It reminds me of the leather in Baldessarini’s ‘Private Affairs’ submerged in black ink. Elegant and masculine, it works for everything from formal to cinema. It doesn’t handle heat well. It was a gift from a friend who didn’t like it, but I loved it. Recommended if you don’t have night or winter perfumes.

The bottle is attractive and follows the brand’s style, with leather straps (which are actually plastic). The cap is heavy metal with a fleur-de-lis on top and the name in graphite gray. It smells strong: leather, tobacco, and smoke reminiscent of Burberry’s London for Men, but the sweet aged rum note appears quickly. It also resembles Dior’s Fahrenheit without the oily aspect, landing right in between. It’s powerful, dense, and pleasant, filling the room fast. Ideal for cold climates, it adds masculinity, but not for young guys or very styled looks; it’s for the alternative, rebellious type.

Damn, what a great fragrance. When I bought it, the first spray left me dazed; I thought it was a cheap knockoff because of how strong it was, but the next day I fell in love. It’s unique among my 38 perfumes. What I notice most is a smoky, burnt wood note with rum, leather, and a subtle sweetness. The dry down is the best part; it unfolds slowly. It lasts easily 8 hours, but be careful: sniff it first because it’s not for everyone.

I sniffed this perfume and it’s totally masculine. Feeling very macho? This is for you, my Spartan friend. What I liked most is that it reminds me a bit of Fahrenheit by Dior, ufffff, and we know what we’re talking about. Smelling it made me think of a chopper or café racer workshop, burnt oil. I imagine riding a café racer, wearing my leather jacket, sporting a full beard (though I’m not allowed at work), heading to a rock bar for a beer and hitting on some rock chick. I’m going to test it on my skin to see if it lasts, because some say it’s eternal while others claim it lasts a breath. The bottle is perfect, rugged, and invites you to kick some ass. Hope it meets my expectations.

What a manly aroma, my Spartan friend. It reminded me a lot of Dior’s Fahrenheit, though at a lower level. I imagined a chopper motorcycle workshop, burnt oil, and café racer vibes. I can see myself in my leather jacket and full beard (though I’m not allowed at work) heading to a rock bar for a beer. I need to test it on my skin to see how long it lasts; some say it’s eternal, others say it lasts a breath. The bottle is tough and perfect, inviting you to kick some ass. Hope it meets my expectations.

  • Smells very similar to Pure Malt but without that excessive Mugler-like sweetness. Then a fantastic tobacco note kicks in, reminiscent of Tom Ford’s Tobacco Oud, blended with woods. I didn’t detect any leather, and it doesn’t feel as rebellious as YouTubers claim; it’s more elegant for casual wear. Smells more expensive than it costs, top-tier quality. Update: the dry down is very woody, almost with an oud touch. The only downside is low projection; you can only smell it on the skin after the third hour.

  • Very masculine and delicious fragrance, with the rum swirling around you as if it wants to make you part of it, only it’s not very persistent and abandons you after 4 or 5 hours, not even at skin level. I would love it if not for its scarce longevity.

What kind of reactions does this perfume get: unexpected ones, until people stick their noses to your neck or arm and smell it for a long time. Without a doubt, I rank it among my top 3 favorites of all time. That mix of leather, rum, tobacco, and other ingredients makes it unique. Its longevity is short, lasting 5 to 6 hours on skin, not bad, but if it were longer it would be a hit. It’s not for everyone; out of 8 reactions, 7 were incredible and one made it clear it was very powerful, just as males should smell, though neither she nor her companions could stand it. In intimacy, it leaves an unforgettable olfactory memory and they end up enchanted. Despite its durability, my rating for this jewel, which is in my top 3 for life, is 10.

  • WOW, what a great fragrance. I don’t feel it as rough as its sibling Dark Rebel Rider, but in terms of scent it’s much better. Since I tested it, I know it would be in my top 3. If not for its poor performance on my skin, it would be my favorite. What a pity that such a great fragrance has such bad longevity on my skin. Surprised by the incredible aroma of something so accessible, but disappointed by my pH.

  • Charming opening but it fades very quickly on my skin. At first you smell the sugar, then gradually the leather, tobacco, and woods take over, dropping to skin level very soon. A bit disappointing because it lasts so little; even at skin level the leather feels very weak.

  • Excellent quality, potent and masculine. It smells like dried glue on me, it’s robust and hard to please. You need to project a serious and virile image to make the most of it. Seems perfect for intimacy with a partner. On my skin it lasts 6 hours feeling like 4, quite potent and evolving, then disappears completely.

  • Excellent quality perfume, potent, masculine, toxic, and penetrating to the max. It smells like drying glue on me, it’s robust and hard to please. You need to project a very serious and virile image to wear it and get the most out of it… I think it’s for intimate moments with a partner. On my skin, it lasted 6 hours feeling like 4, quite potent and constantly mutating. After those 6 hours, it disappears completely.

Leather and that space liquor… what a delight, more wearable than Dark Rebel Rider but with its own style. Praise from all ages, one of the best on the market.

Many say perfumes have no gender: totally wrong. This is rough men’s leather, with resins, herbal, woody, and smoky notes, all combined skillfully. Another hidden niche gem at a commercial price. It’s not for everyone; if you’ve smelled leather or incense, you’ll understand its intensity and depth. A nocturnal, mysterious, unique, and transgressive aroma, perfect for partying, not for kids or the office. It’s the jewel you pull out for special occasions. Encouraged to hunt down the last units of this discontinued gem. I think they pull the jewels off the shelf to leave us with the mediocre and uniform.

The most alpha and rockstar scents I’ve tried. I can already imagine Lemmy Kilmister wearing it as his signature scent.

  • Smells like a motorcycle leather seat and a Motorhead singer. A special fragrance for people with personality. Very rich and a classic in my collection.

  • Leather with a resinous and tobacco note, but rounded out by rum; it doesn’t sting, it shines with spicy undertones at the end without being heavy. Ideal for use, seductive and full of character. Over time, a smoky base gives it a perfect finish. It’s not a powerhouse bomb, but it creates an interesting aura for attitude-filled outfits.
