Honestly, Varvatos surprises. It’s my second purchase from the designer, and this Dark Rebel Rider is fresh, potent, and hypnotic. It sticks to the skin really well; you can definitely detect the saffron and incense. It’s a whole different story when you try it on.
Quite a bit of leather, very strong smell. Pity that in the dry-down my wife said it reminds her of some dead animal.
Lots of leather, the smell is strong. Pity that when it dried down, my wife said it reminded her of some dead animal.
A leather bomb. 8-9 hours of longevity on my skin. It walked right in on my collection. To nitpick, I’d like it to project more.
Today I’ll take the time to share some impressions of the Dark Rebel Rider line by John Varvatos. The bottle tells you everything: dressed in a leather jacket. The message is strong and clear: Dark Rebel Rider wants to tell the story of the old-school motorcyclists who still remain. That rough story where life unfolds on the bike, surrounded by alcohol and fights. Hit the accelerator with a marked citrus opening, a glorious black and bitter cloak. It’s a bitter and dark citrus, where bitter orange, saffron, and others create a great start. It lasts 1 to 2 hours, then crashes brutally into a dry-down that commemorates that well-worn good leather jacket, part of your lifestyle. It’s the olfactory sensation when you bury your nose in torn, dusty leather. Refined leather, elegant but worn by the history of this Rebel Rider. Additionally, it allows other sensations in the heart notes: the leather takes on a neutral, creamy (soft but noticeable) aroma from the iris. Finally, this iris slowly gets infused with resinous notes that act as a bridge between the heart and the grand finale. Pleasant intermediate phase with hidden floral notes, infused with resins and slightly smoked by incense. Reaching the final phase (3 to 4 hours), this cowboy living freedom with his faithful jacket gives way to the famous Russian Leather, which now has personality, although cocoa, vanilla, and patchouli formulate the aroma into a good bourbon. It’s strange, but it follows the logic of this motorcyclist’s story. Glorious finale, not sweet or anything like that; on the contrary, it’s a controlled sweetness and slightly liquor-like. A great achievement by Rodrigo Flores and John Varvatos at an accessible price. Cheers, Perfumado’s.
It has a strong and beautiful note, just like you. Yes, like your eyes… haha. Honestly, I want to write like those who write here. Just kidding, I have the perfume and although I like it, I have to admit it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Pleasant surprise found in this fragrance. It has a marked presence of leather, which fascinates me, and a sweet, liquor-like note that isn’t cloying and is wearable. I don’t know why I found an air of Aramis Life in it, that discontinued perfume that was part of my collection many years ago.
I bought it recently because when I tried it, I really liked it. The opening is potent, sweet, with liquor-like notes. What I like most is the smoky note that lingers, very sweet (I assume from the olivewood incense). I can’t quite distinguish the leather that gives this EDT its character. I wear it in winter because it’s a heavy fragrance for cold climates. Ideal for night too. Unfortunately, its projection and longevity are scarce in my evaluation, dropping to almost nothing after 3 hours. Still, it’s a fairly unique fragrance, so I think it’s worth trying.
The most misunderstood perfume in my collection. The first impression is ‘pff, what is this’, but then it settles, lets the leather and wood come through, and feels almost like a glass of liquor. It’s potent at first, then you start to like it, you understand what it’s trying to say, and it wraps around you. It leaves a trail of sweet, cozy cocoa, so much that sometimes you sigh after a sip. It really stands out in the cold. I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s something I’d want others to remember me by: serious, neat, with character, and an exclusive touch of mystery for winter. I recommend trying it before buying.

I don’t want to write much because everyone else has defined this super awesome perfume well. But I’ll just say something brief: it would be a 10/10 if they released an EDP version. SIMPLY, A MAN’S SCENT. Rocker, woodsman, leather jackets, cedar, cacao ash, and vanilla that was incinerated in a blend of saffron. A fragrance jewel.

DARK REBEL RIDER JV: When I first bought it, I thought, ‘What the hell does this smell like?’ But the more I wore it, the more I understood it. It’s a strong, dark, rebellious, bold, and rough mystery. Its name tells you the way: your nose should ride it straight to a nightclub with action, motorcycles, live rock, and excess. It has that initial rejection, but then it transforms and smells incredible. It’s a gem, a daring and scandalous masterpiece. For cold climates, it’s not for everyone, but I love it. Scent: 9.0. Projection: 2 hours, decent. Longevity: 6 hours. Recommended.
DARK REBEL RIDER JV: When I bought it, I thought, ‘What the hell is this?’ I didn’t understand a thing. But after sniffing it several times, I started to get it, eventually discovering its wonderful scent: strong, dark, rebellious, bold, and rough. The name gives you a hint, but your nose has to explore it to reach its destination: a night out in the city, nightlife, action, motorcycles, live rock, and excess. It has that initial rejection, but after a while… well, it’s not so bad, and suddenly it smells incredible. Wow, it really is. It’s a daring, powerful, scandalous masterpiece. Best for cold weather. Not for everyone, but I love it. Scent: 9.0. Projection: 2 hours, solid. Longevity: 6 hours. Recommended.
Total madness, delicious unisex leather, this is liquid diamond.
Just when I switched to niche perfumes, someone recommended the Varvatos line; even though it’s not one of the most durable, it was definitely different from other designer fragrances… that’s why I bought it in the same order as Club de Nuit and Layton. In short… of the three, this is the one that brought me to tears… it’s SO DISTINCT from everything else… it literally smells like a roadside bar… as if a motorcyclist spilled his liquor on his leather jacket and then got into a fight where the jacket was left forgotten among some wooden pieces. I will definitely buy the entire Varvatos line and perhaps… in the medium term… another Marly perfume.
THE TRUTH IS THIS PERFUME SURPASSED MY EXPECTATIONS. I ORDERED A DECANT TO GET TO KNOW IT BETTER AND PFFFF, GUYS, I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED A SELLER TO ORDER THE FRAGRANCE, IT’S A BANGER!
Another blind buy I made, no regrets… A charming, sweet perfume that my wife loved… It reminds me of Bentley For Men Intense but a bit sweeter and without that marked alcoholic note; to my taste, it’s like a mix of Bentley For Men and Esika Pulse… It might be the incense, but it gives me the sensation of a tobacco note… As another reviewer indicated, it seems to smell like a biker’s tavern… It’s not for everyone, it’s for rebels.
A blind buy and honestly… I’M FASCINATED, it has a serious yet sweet scent, perfect for going out at night in winter or autumn; I don’t recommend it for summer. If your friend or the girl you want to impress is a bit mysterious, rebellious, and likes adventure, she’ll love this fragrance, but I recommend keeping it close so she can smell it; if the girl is a bit more ‘feminine’, I doubt she’ll praise your perfume. If you like dressing in black, especially in leather, whether jackets or boots, this will match perfectly, especially if you have a café racer, chopper, or custom motorcycle. 100% recommended if you prefer serious scents that aren’t too sweet; I find it perfect for men 25 and up, 20 is borderline, but I don’t recommend it for minors at all.
A gem on the brink of extinction… I enjoy it so much that I don’t care how long it lasts or its projection; I ordered three more bottles today in case I can’t find it in the future… my batch code is from May 2016, bought in 2021, so I can’t take risks… I’d rather enjoy it for 4 or 5 hours, which is what envelops me, than lose that pleasure by worrying about its performance… and I believe its performance might be due to that high quality and naturalness of its ingredients, something not common in so many high-performance perfumes… if I’m wrong, I’d like to know to learn and satisfy my curiosity, since nothing would change the pleasure this dying gem brings me…
A jewel in danger of extinction… I enjoy it so much that I ordered three more bottles today, just in case they stop making it. My batch code is from May 2016, bought in 2021, so I can’t take any risks. I prefer to enjoy it for 4 or 5 hours, what envelops me, rather than losing that pleasure by worrying about its performance. I think its performance has to do with that high quality and naturalness of ingredients, something not common. If I’m wrong, I’d like to know just to learn, but I wouldn’t change anything about the pleasure this endangered jewel gives me.
The truth is… it smells remotely similar to Bentley For Men Intense, and comparing them, I prefer the Bentley. It doesn’t have good longevity and fades to skin-level quickly. Depending on your pH, it can make you smell sweaty with aromatic notes. The bottle looks prettier than the scent, which didn’t surprise me. I respect others’ tastes, but for me… it’s indifferent.
Exquisite, innovative, and powerful fragrance; it makes you more alpha than Wolverine himself. Pity that, like all JV fragrances, its projection and longevity are very low.
Many compare it to Bentley For Men Intense, but for me, it has a rich saffron note that dominates, which is why I prefer it over the Bentley, although as the saying goes, tastes differ.
Smells like a dirty jacket, a motorcycle, and an open highway… an absolute gem of modern perfumery, what an intoxicating scent!
I love leather notes, but this is for a select few: it smells ‘tough with pedigree’. If you’re a posh kid or get motion-sick easily, skip it. It’s old-school, hardcore leather, similar to Gucci Guilty Absolute or Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather, nothing like the elegant, shoe-like leather of Ombre Leather. It’s closer to Marlon Brando’s leather jacket in The Wild One, like John Varvatos Dark Rebel. Compared to the cheap hype of iris and rum in Bentley For Men Intense, this is absurd; it’s more like the regular Dark Rebel, which has rum and tobacco but is softer and more versatile. With this DR Rider, I don’t see much resemblance. The issue on my skin is performance: it lasts about 4 hours max with poor projection, especially compared to other leather fragrances that are bombs and project like coal gas. The packaging is awesome: a box with a black leather jacket and a bottle with zippers, a collectible treasure that bikers will flip over. If you’re a serious collector or a leather fan, you need it, even though it’s hard to find in 2023 and costs over 70 euros.
