A perfume definitely from another era, created by the same perfumer behind Chanel No. 5, with a classic aldehydic opening typical of our grandmothers’ fragrances. If you love No. 5, you’ll adore this; if not, you might not. I generally don’t get along with aldehydic openings except for Dior’s Dune and this Chanel beauty. It’s feminine, soft, alluring, and refined, transporting you to the theater or cobblestone colonial streets. If you want to travel back in time, try the Chanel Les Exclusifs line (or some from Dior). If you dream of crochet dresses, walls filled with art, or black-and-white photos, just dive into Bois des Îles.
Wearing this perfume is like traveling back to the 1920s… elegant, different, and classic at first, but then it turns bold, sophisticated, and woody with powdery accents… Another masterpiece from Chanel.
The definitive feminine Egoïste. A bath of aldehydes over a sparkling, exquisite sandalwood base.
Following Blackened’s opinion: we could say it’s the ‘mother’ of Egoïste. I haven’t checked if they share many notes, but they do share one key ingredient: sandalwood. Both feature it prominently—very refined and rich. Bois des Îles is classic, elegant, and suggestive, quite complex with many facets. My nose hasn’t distinguished all of them yet, but I notice a very aldehydic and woody phase. It’s a bit more feminine than other Les Exclusifs scents, but it has a touch that could work for anyone. The best thing is to try it yourself; it’s very complex.

This fragrance makes me feel out of time, almost like an anachronism. Yet, when I hear my parents talk about their youth or watch 70s and 80s shows, I’m instantly transported to that era of hand-sewing and flawless ironing. It evokes the Belle Époque, the roaring 20s with French dressmakers and high society, rationalist architecture and Art Deco, Freudian liberalism, and the distorted art of Picasso, Dalí, and Klee—not to mention Kafka and Joyce. It’s exquisite, refined, and ultra-feminine. Its aldehydic notes, lily of the valley, and sandalwood truly transport me.
