Have you worn Bal à Versailles?

Tell us how it opens, how it settles on your skin, how long it lasts and when you wear it.

  1. Starts with a sandalwood and floral opening that hits you with an ancient warmth, then evolves into a resinous, tempered base that feels as cozy as sitting by a small fireplace. It has a sweet, fully amber body, which takes the lead at the end. It’s a perfumery historiography: the opening is a journey through time, while the trail lingers in the present.

A beautiful fragrance; on my skin, rosemary comes out first, followed by roses and mandarin, emerging into a leather and musk that’s quite sexy with a powdery touch, finishing with benzoin and vanilla. I imagine my anime character, Rose of Versailles (Lady Oscar), wearing this: elegant for visiting Marie Antoinette’s salon, with that animal touch for jumping into action in a dawn duel, riding her favorite horse. It won’t appeal to gourmand lovers or fans of current fragrances, but it’s a jewel for those who like the different, vintage, and uncommon.

  3. Cosmoloid

Dense and rich fragrance with a refined blend of many notes. Very oriental, featuring woods, leather, and musk; vanilla rounds out the base of resins, benzoin, and amber. Totally unisex. It’s a 60s Eau de Toilette bottle that performs like an Eau de Parfum: lasts about 6 hours with moderate projection. Highly recommended.

A very rich and dense fragrance with mixed components showing great refinement despite the quantity of notes. A very well-described oriental, woods, leather, musk. Vanilla rounds out the base of resins, benzoin, and amber. Totally unisex. My review is about a bottle of Eau de toilette from the 60s; it works like an Eau de Parfum, lasting about 6 hours with moderate projection. Highly recommended.

I had relatives who used it when I was little. The fragrance is beautiful. It has a trail that catches attention because it’s good, fine, and very lovely, something you won’t see in any other fragrance today. It has special magic. It elevates you and takes you to a dream, something like a gala ball on a starry night, with an orchestra playing a waltz. To me, this is Bal à Versailles. It’s a perfume I will remember forever.

This is the fragrance Michael Jackson used for years. I’ve never tried it, but I can perfectly imagine it.

  7. By courtesy of Krasnylips, I have a sample of this fragrance. Just seeing the quantity and variety of notes impresses me. I won’t repeat what my predecessors have already said, just my personal experience. The opening is imposing and animalic: aldehydes, musk, oakmoss, vetiver, and a touch of leather. I was warned, but… who said perfumers are cowards? I want to know where this olfactory explosion will take me… Ohhhh! It’s very warm, a sweet blend of mandarin, bergamot, and neroli. I don’t detect more flowers. Immediately, a deep, rich, and delicious base of honeyed musk, amber, and benzoin, wrapped in animalic resinous notes. A very complex fragrance; I want to keep deciphering it, but the lion isn’t as fierce as they paint it. It melts into the skin and warms it. A mature scent, of all times and for anyone who wants to wear it. An oriental for very close distances, soft silk and velvet. I don’t perceive darkness; Tabu seems darker to me, but there’s no innocence in it either. I have an image in mind: a beautiful naked woman looking in a full-length mirror. Behind her, her lover, fully dressed, contrasting the roughness of the fabric with the softness of her skin. Drawing her to him, he slowly caresses her, while she, holding her breath, discovers desire in his gaze, how her face flushes, and how her body reacts to the sensual caresses of her partner’s expert hands. This fragrance makes you conscious of your own sensuality. For winter nights and very intimate occasions, worn close to the skin. No complaints about its duration, more than 8 hours on me, and its trail is very good, filling my entire room. Since it’s a sample, I can’t opine on the bottle, though I do remember seeing it in my mother’s friend’s house a long time ago. I’m going to spray some on my pillow, sure to have beautiful dreams…

  8. Thanks to Krasnylips, I have a sample. Just seeing the sheer quantity and variety of notes is impressive. I won’t repeat what my predecessors said, just my experience. The opening is imposing and animalic: aldehydes, galbanum, oakmoss, vetiver, and a touch of leather. I was warned, but who said fragrant people are cowards? I wanted to see how far this explosion would take me. Ohhhh! It’s very warm. A sweet blend of mandarin, bergamot, and neroli. I don’t detect more florals. Soon, a deep, rich, and delicious base of muskyl honey, amber, and benzoin, wrapped in animalic resinous notes. It’s very complex; I want to keep deciphering it, but the lion isn’t as fierce as they paint. It melts into the skin and warms it. A mature scent, timeless, for anyone who wants to wear it. An oriental for close quarters, soft silk and velvet. I don’t sense darkness; Tabu seems darker to me, but there’s no innocence here either. I imagine a beautiful woman naked in front of a mirror, with her lover dressed behind her, contrasting the roughness of the fabric with the softness of her skin. 9. They reformulated it right when I just bought it, and it smells nice, but its scent lasts half an hour and then leaves a very poor vanilla trail. It’s a pity it costs so much and fades away; I would never buy it again.

  10. Morder doll

Beautiful, powerful, and elegant! It brings back childhood memories; my mother wore it to grand events, looking stunning with her smile and red lips. It’s a delicious yet potent perfume that gave my mother a glamorous aura. It makes me think of movie stars and balls from the time of Louis XIV. Not for everyday wear, but something special.

  11. Morder doll

Beautiful, powerful, and incredibly elegant! It reminds me of my childhood; my mother used to wear it at big events. How could I forget her so beautiful and elegant, with her lovely smile and blonde curls? That delicious yet potent fragrance. Yes, my mother looked glamorous, and Bal à Versailles was the cherry on top. It makes me think of movie stars and balls from the Louis XIV era. It’s not for every day or for everyone; it’s special.

  12. Bella y Perfumada

A ball in Versailles. In 1962, Jean Desprez launched this fragrance in Paris in a pretty box painted by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, master of the rococo. It was very popular, with a strong hot musk for winter. Jacqueline Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Michael Jackson loved it. It evokes a day and a night in Versailles: men with powdered wigs and women in big dresses and towering wigs. It’s for Queen Marie Antoinette before the Revolution. The ball starts with citrus notes of mandarin, bergamot, and lemon, plus night jasmine, roses, and cassia, which are like grapes or wine. It starts very citrusy and aromatic. Patchouli dominates the heart with green and floral notes of lily, but soon it becomes animalic: musk and ambergris, with incense, benzoin, and wood. It’s deep, very musky, like putting on a fur coat. Perfect for winter in cold countries. It’s complex, mature, dark, and sensual. For me, it’s not Marie Antoinette, but King Louis XIV, powerful and masculine, as if he just arrived from the countryside hunting animals. I don’t wear it very often, but it has charm. Many women should use it to leave a mystery or change tastes if they only like soft scents. It’s totally animalic musk, and I like to turn into an animal from time to time.

  13. I own both the original cologne and the EDP from 20 years ago. Bal à Versailles smells refined, like a masquerade ball from another time. It features notes of galbanum and resin, an intoxicating amber, a powdery rose, and a subtle mandarin. Deep down, there are flashes of patchouli and sandalwood. Everything is balanced to be elegant and soft. Over time, it becomes more powdery, with mandarin, rose, and vanilla taking center stage. While they differ, they share the same DNA as Narcisse Noir and Habanita. The old cologne is the most romantic; the current version is more aggressive and less refined.
