  Is luxury in a bottle? That’s how I’d describe the 31RC EDP. It’s an unusual chypre because it lacks oakmoss, giving it a vibe that jumps between vintage and modern. Polge recreates that classic Chanel-style structure: voluptuous, round, with a powerful heart of iris and ylang-ylang. It doesn’t start with fresh citrus but hits with a green, fresh, and spicy note. It has multiple phases to enjoy. I haven’t tried the discontinued EDT, which is said to be sharper; this EDP reminds me of Coromandel in the base and even Le Lion. The dry-down is very pleasant, with noticeable patchouli and vetiver. I understand it might polarize tastes; you just need to give it time to develop. The opening is surprising and takes you to vintage Chanel, playing with many ingredients so you don’t know where it’s going; in less than an hour it turns unisex toward masculine, the florals warm up and open a typical Chanel base. I enjoy it more as it dries down, hoping the ylang-ylang lowers that banana accord I don’t like. This Exclusif is very complex, I think it’s one of the most original alongside Le Lion. It doesn’t take Coromandel’s place as king of the line. It’s not a blind buy; you have to try, try again, and give it time because it doesn’t reveal itself at first. The price is very high, yes, but you don’t get a feeling of being ripped off; whether you like it or not, the quality and craftsmanship are always there from Polge/Chanel.
