Born in England, Mark Buxton’s fascination with fragrances began when he grew up near Hamburg. More than 20 years ago, he fell in love with Paris—later becoming the epicenter of his career as a perfumer. Buxton has many passions, including a love of wine, culinary arts, and antiques, particularly those with an Art Deco air.
A chance encounter on a German contest show, where a 21-year-old Buxton and a friend tried to identify 600 perfumes in a blind test, led representatives of Haarmann & Reimer (now Symrise) to offer him a place in their prestigious training program in Paris. This fortuitous event kicked off his extraordinary journey in the world of fine fragrance creation.
With more than 25 years of experience, Mark Buxton has collaborated with leading fragrance houses internationally and has designed scents for some of the most luxurious brands, such as Givenchy, Versace, Van Cleef & Arpels, Paco Rabanne, Lagerfeld, Burberry, Cartier, Chopard, and Ferré. His bold personal signature was first revealed when he created the inaugural fragrance for Comme des Garçons. He quickly gained recognition in the world of Haute Parfumerie, and since then he has taken part in various artistic projects.
Buxton’s wide-ranging portfolio includes collaborations with brands such as Oddity, biehl parfumkunstwerke, Brooklyn Soap Company, Cale Fragranze d’Autore, Le Labo, and WienerBlut. Some of his most popular creations include Paco Rabanne Black XS for Her, Salvador Dali Laguna, Comme des Garçons Comme des Garçons 2, and Kajal Lamar.
Mark Buxton’s approach to perfume creation is characterized by an eclectic style that blends traditional British sensibilities with contemporary dandysm, rock, and unconventional energy. His unconventional yet wearable creations challenge luxury codes with irreverence and boldness. Buxton’s pursuit of absolute simplicity is reflected in his fluid rigor and concise olfactory formulas.
His work with Comme des Garçons, particularly the creation of the original fragrance and CDG 2, exemplifies Buxton’s distinctive touch and has helped solidify the fashion house’s place in the niche fragrance world. His footprint can also be found in high-end perfumery, from House of Sillage’s ultra-luxury collection to Le Labo’s intoxicating Vetiver 46.
In 2010, Mark Buxton decided to invest in new creative projects, becoming one of the investors in Nose, a Paris boutique dedicated to niche fragrances. Through his eponymous brand, Mark Buxton Perfumes, he aims to freely express and share his creative universe. The brand embodies a refined world of astonishing modernity, launching its first collection of candles in 2019.
