Magnificent Layton clone. Until now, the best imitation I knew was Royal Equestrian, but after trying this, things changed. RE is fantastic with incredible power, but it’s not as balanced as the original or this one, and when I enjoy it the most is when that strong radiance fades, moving closer to an almondy note rather than apple and being quite sweeter than Layton. ‘I’, on the other hand, is well-blended from the start and kicks off with the part I like most: the green apple and spices, though the woods are already very present thanks to the ambroxan. Plus, the performance is excellent; it projects amazingly well and has good longevity. I need to get a bottle as soon as possible, but they’re hard to find.

  • Costume National isn’t strictly niche, but in some cases, it far surpasses true niche brands, as with this perfume. I think it’s a great proposal featuring leather and suede notes over wood, lavender, and cedar, creating something enveloping and decisive yet extremely refined. You can detect a blend of fine spices intertwined with floral touches and a confit labdanum under a layer of sugar. The opening is gorgeous, with floral-spicy bursts dancing under your nose, suggesting something strong and very sweet. Then the sweetness softens, leaving behind an elegant ambroxan-leather that warms up, all wrapped in a delicate blanket of labdanum and spices like saffron, superbly soft, like being wrapped in a white blanket as the temperature drops. Beautiful, totally unisex, very pleasant, a bright scent of a certain caliber. (Courtesy of Sejano 77)

Straight to the point: it smells 85% like Layton. The green apple is missing, and the vanilla is less intense, giving way to citrus notes from bergamot and a very woody, spicy base. The leather and animalic notes are barely noticeable, setting it apart from scents like Hugo Boss Absolu. Performance is good, lasting 6 to 8 solid hours on skin with decent projection (I received a decant as a gift, so I’ll keep testing it). It feels more synthetic than the original, so it could be an Arabic dupe despite being from an up-and-coming Italian house. If you’re a collector seeking the best, go for Layton, but for 95% of people, there won’t be a noticeable difference (just like with Aventus and Club de Nuit), plus it costs three times less. Personally, I wouldn’t buy it; it’s a pleasant but unnecessary scent. I have many other options from both Costume National and Parfums de Marley before this: my first, second, third, fourth, and fifth purchase. – Scent: 7/10 – Longevity: 8/10 – Projection: 7/10 – Quality: 7.5/10 – Originality: 2/10 – Value: 9/10
