Musk Aswad is that black, animalic, and sweet musk—powerful and masculine, though it has a touch I’d love to try on a woman; in Arab perfumery, the line between men’s and women’s scents is very blurred, so even though Abdul labeled it as highly masculine, I adore its androgyny: it’s sensual, carnal, and super animalic. It’s linear, with not many shifts, a blend of musk and vetiver that’s very animalic and dirty, yet balanced by the sweetness of prune, honey, and a hint of vanilla. That sweetness prevents it from being unpleasant while keeping that dirty character. Sometimes I thought it was a beautiful floral musk, but it was just a distant impression, because when I smelled it on my wrist, there was no trace of flowers. This is the scent throughout the entire development: at first, the sweet notes and the plum come through more intensely, then they fade until the perfume dries down and clings to the skin. Without a doubt, it’s a dark musk with lots of explicit material; in another era, this would have been censored… absolutely gorgeous. The performance is amazing—it’s been on my skin for over 10 hours with a very noticeable sillage for at least the first two hours, then drops to moderate and gradually fades until it disappears on the skin. I achieved this with a minimal amount, and for me, it’s totally unisex. Ideally, wear it at night, between winter, fall, and spring; I don’t think it would work in summer because it could be too overpowering, though as I always say, this is relative and everyone knows when to use it. I liked it; it’s a very sexual and animalic aroma that surprised me because I’m not a fan of perfumes with heavy musk notes, but this one hooked me. Maybe it’s age or my sense of smell is maturing, hehehe. If you like musks with sexual connotations, you have to try it—highly recommended for its very low price and incredible performance, making it one of the most affordable in the house.
