Descripción

Enigme by Pierre Cardin is a spicy aromatic fragrance for men. Launched in 1992, this composition was created by perfumer Alberto Morillas. The top notes unfold a fresh and green accord featuring coriander, lavender, tarragon, orange, bergamot, and lemon. The heart reveals a warm and spicy floral bouquet thanks to carnation, cinnamon, rose, jasmine, and geranium. Finally, the base offers a woody and sweet foundation with oakmoss, sandalwood, benzoin, musk, labdanum, patchouli, cedar, vanilla, amber, and tonka bean.

Brutal fragrance; I used it several years ago when I was young and just starting to try the world’s first EDPs… I remember its incredible sillage (it lasted for hours), citrus notes, maybe cypress, something aquatic, woods, incense, green and fresh… all with a top-tier harmony!

  • A jewel that seems to have disappeared; at least here in Argentina, I can’t find it anymore. Its Art Deco carved bottle and woody aroma convey a refined, formal, and elegant masculinity. It makes me imagine a luxury ship from the 20s or 40s, or a room with mossy walls, noble wood furniture, and floral arrangements.

  • A little gem that seems discontinued; at least in Argentina, I haven’t seen it again. Woody in an enigmatic way inside an Art Deco carved bottle, both scream refined masculinity, formality, and elegance. It gives me the sensation of traveling on a luxury ship from the 20s to the 40s, or being in rooms of that style, with mossy walls on the outside, interiors with noble woods, and floral arrangements.

  • I bought it blind, knowing almost nothing beyond what Fragrántica said. They convinced me that a perfume hidden behind that name and that Art Deco bottle couldn’t fail (ever since I saw it, it reminds me of the dystopian Metropolis by Fritz Lang). The truth is, Enigme is correct and pleasant, but has nothing to do with its name or look. It’s a spicy aromatic that smells good and could work for daily wear for someone not seeking mystery, but it hardly leaves a mark. The opening is very spicy, almost too much, with barely noticeable citrus and a very strong cinnamon. Once that spicy charge drops, I start liking it more; it gets sweeter, I think it smells like sandalwood, and you can detect the oakmoss. Although the description lists a ton of notes, I can’t isolate them. Overall, when the spice eases up, it smells great. Still, the opening can be a bit overwhelming, and while it lasts quite a bit on the skin, its projection and sillage leave much to be desired.

Let me be direct: at first, it smells exactly like Aramis Havana—spices, a touch of citrus, and honey. Then it gets very close to Montana Pour Homme from ’89; Morillas removed the excess moss, patchouli, and leather, boosted the middle notes, and made it more wearable, fresh, and commercial. The Montana knockoffs sold in Argentine drugstores in the 90s smelled more like Enigme than the original Montana.
