They used to gift me this fragrance during my teenage years; I never fell in love with it, possibly because they gave it to me for its affordable price. It has pleasant and balanced notes, but it’s not distinctive, and unfortunately, it always leaves a very obvious alcohol trail. I wouldn’t buy it on my own. The longevity is moderate, and the sillage is very soft. It’s a somewhat bland floral scent.
It’s my first time here and I’m looking for the original Pavlova, not the 1977 version. My mother gifted me a small bottle with a black cap and a charming scent years ago; it was old but very soft. What I loved most was the dry-down, sweet but not cloying like today’s scents, a strange floral-sweet combination that made me smell like myself. I just bought the 1977 version and I’m sad: first, because I was tricked—they gave me a sample of the original but sold me the 1977 version. However, it smells like the 1922 version in the top and heart notes and stays there. The base notes are nonexistent. I know this perfume well, and that sweet touch is missing; it doesn’t smell bad, but it’s not charming either, and it doesn’t resemble anything I’ve smelled before. What a pity that the new version, by modernizing itself, lost the charm and magic it once conveyed, just like the famous ballerina Pavlova.
What a pity we can’t always judge fragrances in their original form! Just looking at Anna Pavlova’s black-and-white photos reveals what the notes tell: elegance, opulence, and the sweetness of that Russian ballerina who conquered the world. I own an 80s cologne and the current version. There’s some resemblance, but in the new one, the opulence and sweetness are gone, turning it into a generic ‘old-school’ chypre that feels like every other. The new version is greener, similar to an old Cabochard. The original Pavlova is sweet, perhaps one of the sweetest chypres I’ve ever tried, with excellent moss and cassia and an incredible balance between citrus, raspberry, and vanilla. The hyacinth is perfectly orchestrated with the white flowers. It’s intoxicating, refined, and opulent. For a cologne, it’s very persistent. There are many versions with the perfume’s birth year, but all Pavlova bottles (and even the fragrance itself) scream 1970s; I doubt it’s from the 2020s. I also don’t think it’s floral, because its composition is more complex and encompassing. Without a doubt, a little gem.
Charming little perfume, smells like old soap and has something very special about it.
