  • Forget modern gendered fragrances: back in 1960, perfumes were either strictly for men or women. A few years later, with brands like D&G and Prada, anything could be worn by anyone. Today, Honeymoon fits perfectly into that category thanks to its sandalwood, wood, tonka, and cedar notes.

  • It’s the perfect example of an ultra-cheap perfume I absolutely love. Honeymoon is a subtle wood scent sweetened with a creamy base of rose and musk, accented with hints of carnation and lavender; a westernized oriental, very light but with excellent longevity. I haven’t seen it in ages, maybe it’s discontinued, but until recently it was only ten euros. It doesn’t smell synthetic, cheap, or vulgar. Although it has that generalist catalog perfume vibe, it wasn’t meant to be anything else. I love the original Vanderbilt, but this 90s version is more ambiguous, youthful, and sophisticated, with modern balsamic nuances like in the ‘Space Honeymoon’ ad. Back in 1996, when Vanderbilt was no longer the big 70s brand, this was a lovely attempt to stay relevant. My grandma had a bottle at home, and I’d always go to the bathroom just to smell the cap; I absolutely loved it.

  • I love how it dries down: floral yet rough, musky, and edible. The sandalwood is very raspy. After a full day, it transforms into a musky oriental with an undisclosed sun peach note, perfect for unisex wear. The trail on skin and clothes is marvelous—a cool, sweet, velvety breeze that smells like the perfume counters at El Corte Inglés in 1995; it smells way more expensive than it costs. The longevity and projection are medium to low, but given the price, the drama is minimal.

  • Gloria Vanderbilt, the 92-year-old legend who inspired Audrey Hepburn and broke the mold with jeans, has her own signature: Honeymoon. Launched in 1996 by L’Oréal without crediting the creator, it’s pure budget luxury. Its sweetness is a French ‘Guerlinade’ accord—sophisticated and powdery, with jasmine, lily of the valley, and vanilla creating an addictive effect. It has a fruity touch of peach and a woody base with sandalwood and tonka bean that smells like a patisserie cake. It’s unisex but with feminine elegance, far from today’s fruity choulis. Its trail is discreet but long-lasting; smelling your arm in the morning feels like waking up to an expensive breakfast.
