  It’s an incredibly rare fragrance. The person who sold it to me told me that Ellena said he wanted to subvert the classic iris and work with that lesser-known scent of the Floating World flowers. It’s delicate yet very present, with impressionistic touches of rose, orange blossom, and mandarin. The opening is fresher and more floral, then it becomes creamy and juicy. It has nothing to do with other known iris scents. To me, in winter, sometimes it smells like the rubber on those doll skins, but it’s strangely beautiful. It’s not something to buy blindly, but rather to collect and study, which is what I do. I think it opens up more in the heat. I don’t dare spray it on my neck, but I can’t stop smelling it on my wrist.

  Ukiyoé Iris is inspired by those Japanese woodblock prints of the Floating World, and perfumer JC Ellena, who is a master of this art, manages to capture the fresh vegetal note of the iris without it sounding soapy or cosmetic. It opens with mandarin and a super fresh, almost airy iris, which then gives way to orange blossom with a bright, bitter touch. The rose starts off subdued so as not to steal the spotlight. In the dry down, it leaves a powdery, musky trail that lasts about 5 hours. It doesn’t aim to last forever or fill the room; its magic lies in that natural simplicity and the story behind it.
