If the best of the eighties was that optimism for the future, society was happier, and you could feel it in the culture. Take the movie ‘Electric Dreams’ (1984) for example, featuring a love triangle between an architect, his PC, and the gorgeous Virginia Madsen. Today it might seem naive, but it radiates a desire to live. Miguel Matos, inspired by the film and its magical theme, creates the unofficial scent of that joy. Without a traditional olfactory pyramid, it’s impressionistic and seeks an emotion with just a few strokes. The opening intoxicates with sweet banana, plastic flowers, overheated circuits, and a clean musky base, like a freshly wiped computer. It’s an artifact of emotions to revive the nostalgia of an incredible future. It makes you smile, it’s innocent, cheerful, and shameless. The banana lasts for hours without being cloying, followed by synthetic nuances that sum up the era’s modernity, like the smell of a video arcade or technology in shopping malls. It has great longevity and lasts longer than usual. In these dark times filled with catastrophic news, where the powers that be have stolen our joy, this perfume is an act of defiance. It invites you to be happy and look people in the eye. Maybe it won’t make a computer fall in love, but it will make any human heart beat a little faster.
I always test perfumes on skin before deciding, and this one is no exception. Don’t be fooled by its performance on paper; it’s a very peculiar and original scent, far from the usual. It’s worth a try because it has something special that might appeal to more than one nose. Warning: it will be polarizing—you’ll either love it or hate it. Although it differs, it vibrates like a Nasomatto Fantomas due to its mix of plastic and fruity notes, but here it’s better balanced. The smoke is more distant, making it friendlier. You can detect banana interwoven with a fruity blend and an old strawberry bubblegum note, those 5-peseta ones with 80s stickers. All of this goes hand in hand with hot plastic, like smelling an overheated computer from the inside. Over time, the fruity and plastic notes fade, leaving the smoky base more exposed. With moderate projection, it’s well-balanced and interesting, feeling smokier yet wearable. There’s also a floral and musky touch. It’s a little-known perfume that deserves attention, especially if you like Fantomas, which is excellent and also a favorite of mine.
