It starts with a super liturgical, effervescent, and smoky olibanum. Gradually, dry, spicy cinnamon emerges alongside the resins (lots of laudanum), which feel sticky. Then the oud kicks in, making it more woody, dry, and spicy, with the cinnamon always taking center stage. There are also animal nuances—somewhat dirty but calming—with the smoky base still present. Finally, a creamy sweetness from vanilla and beeswax. It remains woody and spicy but less so. Performance is good; great presence at first and excellent longevity. Totally masculine and better suited for cool climates. In my opinion, it has quality, the notes sound natural, and its performance is appreciated, but it doesn’t quite captivate me. I don’t think it’s easy to buy blind, especially if you don’t like resinous, dry, smoky, or heavily spiced perfumes.
Dense and dark fragrance. In Chile, we have a cough syrup with honey and other ingredients called ‘palto miel,’ and DEV 1 smells remarkably similar to it. Once it dries down, it transforms completely into a green, incense-like base. I really liked it. Heavy sillage and incredible longevity.
DEV 1 takes the crown for the wildest scent, beating out number two. Laudanum rules here, paired closely with civet and oud to create such an original accord it’s almost scary. It has a salty edge, likely from ambergris, and even smells like a wet dog (maybe the Cerberus vibe?), but everything is perfectly balanced. In the dry down, there’s a sugary cane sweetness that, mixed with the main notes, reminds me of a cherry lollipop. A perverse, infernal treat, if you can say that.
