I absolutely love violets—a taste inherited from my grandmother and her sister, who always grew violets in colorful ceramic pots that now decorate my living room. My great-aunt, who spent summers at the beach with the whole family, always brought a giant box of violet candies, a wonderful mystery to me. She also gifted different French perfumes each year: L’Air du Temps, Sans la Nuit de Worth, and a rare Guerlain with a mushroom-shaped cap. My grandmother would give us light wool coats with fur in boxes perfumed with Avon soap bars, a level of detail that’s sadly not done anymore. My aunt brought a violet perfume in a large, heavy bottle, an Eau de Toilette that we all used in the ladies’ bathroom. When she visited, she’d lovingly braid my hair, rubbing her hands with cologne, running them through my hair, and kissing me. I don’t know what perfume it was, only that her brother brought it from France, and I’m still searching for it without losing hope. April Violets is the closest match: simple, soft, sweet, fluffy, and fresh violets with a citrus and green note, natural and lightly talc-like with sandalwood and vanilla. They’re far from heavy, dark violets; they smell of quality and exclusivity. If they cost as much as an Aqua Allegoria, I’d buy them in a heartbeat. April Violets is a warm, cheerful ray of sunlight, perfect for girls, evoking tenderness. I didn’t have high expectations, but it pleasantly surprised me; for €8, you can enjoy it guilt-free. It’s a sweetness to share, perfect from spring onward. If you love violets, don’t miss it—it will bring you joy, and maybe one day your daughters will remember you by being perfumed and braided with tender hands. Remember the power of olfactory memory and the satisfaction it brings.
