  This review is for the original formula: it doesn’t apply if you’re looking for info to buy the relaunched version. I wouldn’t hesitate to spend that much money if it were as good as described here. The 1947 classic is a high-quality masculine fragrance that stands apart from niche options like Chanel Pour Monsieur, Eau Sauvage, or Monsieur de Givenchy. It opens with familiar notes (lavender) and settles into masculine accords (patchouli, castoreum, oakmoss, licorice, cedar). It has moderate longevity and projection, belonging to a different world than scents like Joop! Homme, A*Men, or Le Mâle. Upon spraying, it smells very animalic at first, but quickly shifts to a lavender/vanilla accord similar to Caron’s Pour Un Homme. That initial impression is misleading due to haste: the lavender and vanilla give way to cinnamon, which, combined with the animalic notes, takes over the formula. It’s not offensive; it features an amber base in the old-fashioned style—modern amber is usually vanilla-heavy, but here it has a hesperidic twist that makes it sharp and pleasant. The development is fast but very enjoyable, much like the brands mentioned. Final thought: I’m very curious about the current version and wonder what has changed. Some forums say its longevity is notable, which I’d love to hear because I’d enjoy wearing it for longer.
