  LA MAISON FRAGONARD is largely unknown to the general public and even to perfume enthusiasts. For example, famous online perfume retailers in Spain don’t carry any FRAGONARD products. Not Notino, nor Paco Perfumerías, nor Perfumes’Club, nor Primor, nor El Corte Inglés, nor Druni, nor Douglas, nor Nadia, nor Le Secret du Marais. Nobody sells Fragonard perfumes in Spain. On Amazon Spain, they’re sold at rather high prices. The only place I’ve seen FRAGONARD perfumes at unbeatable prices is my go-to Vinted (a buy-and-sell site for perfumes from five European countries), which, despite occasional hiccups, remains an endless source of affordable treasures and discoveries for me. The Maison FRAGONARD is one of those houses that commands my respect because it’s still a family-based company rooted in GRASSE (France), currently led by Françoise and Agnès Costa, the great-granddaughters of the founder, Eugène Fuchs. EUGÈNE FUCHS, a notary originally from Alsace, France, traveled to GRASSE to alleviate his bronchial asthma, thanks to the mild climate of the Alpes Maritimes and the purity of its waters. Falling in love with the city and its perfumery tradition, he left his profession and purchased an old perfumery there in 1926, in one of the city’s oldest factories, originally built by perfumer Claude Mottet in 1841. He named the factory-perfumery FRAGONARD in honor of JEAN-HONORÉ FRAGONARD (1732-1806), the son of a perfumer-gloves maker from Grasse and a Rococo painter of the Ancien Régime under Louis XVI. Born in Grasse, with a hedonistic and sensual aesthetic clearly influenced by Rubens. EMILIE is a decidedly floral and delicate perfume, yet delicate with a somewhat sensual surprise. What stands out from the start is the violet flower, with that clean, soapy, virginal quality. This effect is enhanced by bergamot and white musk, which blend their citrus and refreshing notes with the violet blossoms. Because EMILIE is a perfect first fragrance for a teenager who wants to stop smelling like candy and gum and aims to stand out from the rest of her class at school. Hidden behind the violet, you can detect the more sensual scents of a rose, jasmine, and lily of the valley—nothing animalistic, but adding those doses of contained sensuality within the hormonal fragrances of adolescence striving to break free between the virginity of violets and social restrictions. A sweet, woody base of sandalwood and amber adds complexity and a texture halfway between lost innocence and newly discovered lust. As it dries down, a surprising indolic jasmine emerges, anticipating the passionate teenage nights to come. EMILIE is a classy, exquisite, complex fragrance with good longevity that’s worth getting to know.

  Years ago, after a trip to France, my sister—who knew about my obsession with sniffing perfumes—gifted me a box of samples of Fragonard’s classic feminine fragrances. Among them was Émilie, my absolute favorite. I was very young, and its delicate, innocent yet sensual floral scent captivated me completely. I used up the small bottle quickly but kept it like gold to revisit occasionally and remember its smell. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anywhere in Spain to buy it. I see people here compare it to Yves Saint Laurent’s Paris, probably because of the violet; I don’t really get that, it just reminds me of Cotton Candy to me. I haven’t found its creation year listed here, which would have been nice to know, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that a beauty like Émilie is listed on Fragrantica and even has its own review. Bravo.
