We were very lucky in San Sebastián, finding quality local shops like Benegas, Urbieta, and Hunky Dory Lab. Thanks to them, we could try fragrances that are hard to find, such as the legendary FLORIS at Benegas. Founded in 1730 by Minorcan Juan Famenias Florit, it’s one of the oldest houses and holds two Royal Warrants: for Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Wales. I was eager to try something from this house, and my first choice was Bouquet de La Reine, created for Queen Victoria in 1840. I expected a more intense fruity opening, but no; all the fruity notes are wrapped in a divine creaminess that at first feels like a rich body lotion, but it’s a fragrance after all. The fruits blend very delicately with the stars of the show: the flowers. Bouquet de La Reine is very feminine without being cheesy or ‘girly’—it’s the adult, sophisticated version of fruity-floral scents, a true beauty that I suspect will be underrated. It’s discreet with a short sillage, but the longevity is spectacular. It wasn’t love at first sniff, but rather a calm, steady love that I suspect will last a long time.
